Computer-related: Anyone know how I can...
connect to a network printer if I'm not actually logged into the network? Is there any way to do this?
I'm on a laptop at a client's office and can access the internet via an ethernet cable, but I'm not actually logged into their office's network. There is no wireless network set up either.

Re: Computer-related: Anyone know how I can...
What's up, this is Stacey's DH. If you go to the printer there should be one or two buttons on it that will allow you to check the settings (normally a "menu" and a "select" button). If not, ask them if they have the manual that came with the printer. Through navigating all the menus, you will eventually get to an option that says "print configuration page". Press select and it will print a page that should contain an i.p. address. This is what you will use when installing the printer on your laptop. Another way you can obtain the i.p. address is, from another person there who has the printer installed, right-click their printer icon, then left click 'Properties', then go to the 'Ports' tab. Whichever item is selected in the list is the i.p. it is using (you may have to re size the column heading to view the full address; to do so just hover the pointer on the column divider until it is a double-arrow that you can use to re-size the column). Note this method of obtaining the i.p. is only possible if the people there had their printers installed by i.p. (it is the standard for about 90% of network printers, but some people still use LAN-based printing (i.e. connecting to a Novell or Windows server). Once you have th i.p. address, click Start\Settings\Printers (or "Printers and Faxes"), then click "Add new printer". Click Next, then select "Local printer attached to this computer", and if 'Automatically detcet...: is selected, deselect it, then click Next again. On the next screen, click the bullet at the bottom that says "Create a new port", then click Next. The next screen should have an option for yo uto enter the i.p. address that you obtained from the config page (or another persons computer). After clicking Next again, you will be prompted for information about the netwrok card. You can select "generic", then click Next again. The remaining prompts will be basic options, such as if you want to name the printer, whether you want to set it as default, etc. There will also be a portion where you will have to install the printer driver. At this point, choose the Manufacturer from the list on the left, and then the model printer on the right side list. If you do not see the specific printer, pick whatever model matches closest (i.e. if it is a 995 model and you only see "900 series", select that one.
Hope this helps. If you have any questions let me know.

Re: Computer-related: Anyone know how I can...
Sorry to hear it...If you still want to try getting it working let me know. I'll have Stacey send a forum mail with my cell number. Or if you just want to write back, let me know what type of error you're getting, or if it is printing, but just jibberish, etc...My kids are sleeping and I am stuck watching the L Word (and she skips through the good parts for God's sake!). Working on a printing problem seems like a welcome prospect!
