concerned mom-DC has not said dada/mama yet
the girls are 8 months old, and still nothing. They were born 6.5 weeks early.
Should I be concerned? (my ped didn't seem worried at their appt, but of course as the mom, I am)
Did anyone's DC speak for the first time after this time?

I don't think you have to worry. I read somewhere that with premies you have to go by where they would be had they been born on time. Lance just started saying mama at 7 months.

Steven doesn't say it either. He clearly says BAD. Also, it sounds like he's saying "good" sometimes.
I really don't think you should be worried. They are probably too busy doing other things i.e. crawling, sitting, playing.

I bet one day out of the blue they will just start saying mama and dada! Hang in there, it will be any day now!

Don't be concerned. DC is only 8 months old and as long as he/she is babbling and making sounds there is no need to worry

Re: concerned mom-DC has not said dada/mama yet
I actually had no idea that babies spoke that early!! My DD is almost 11 months & does not say words yet. She says dadadada but she calls everyone & everything that. She doesn't just use it for DH. She has not mastered the MMM sound yet. I'm not concerned at all. All of my friends' kids didn't speak until after 1 year.

Definitely do not be worried! And also, don't be surprised if they have their own "language" between the two of them that makes them less concerned for a while with the outside world. I was a nanny for two twin boys who could communicate beautifully with each other, but we could not figure out what the heck they were saying They were 16 months at the time.

Re: concerned mom-DC has not said dada/mama yet
I wouldn't worry at all, especially considering that they were born early. It's great that they're babbling! That's good! First words might not appear until around 1 year.
I'm a speech pathologist so of course I thought my son should be speaking in sentences at 1 month old , but he didn't even start babbling until 9.5 months old. (he was making vowel sounds before that, but not really any consonants) I was starting to get worried about him. Well, fast forward to 15 months and he has about 60 words already!

Definitely do not worry until after they are at least a year old. Eight months is really early and as long as they're babbling, they're probably fine!

Re: concerned mom-DC has not said dada/mama yet
another speech therapist here telling you not to worry as long as they are doing some babbling, thats great for 8 months! especially, like others said, considering they were born almost 2 months early! first words usually come at about a year, and usually by 18 months, you start to see an explosion of words. so they've got plenty of time! as long as they are babbling- just keep encouraging that by doing it back to them, and just keep modeling words for things and use simple, short sentences/language when you talk to them

Re: concerned mom-DC has not said dada/mama yet
both of my girls spoke after that time they were born 11 weeks early. They are 16 months now and Reese still doesn't say much. My doctor didn't seem worried at all. I heard it could take up to 2 years for your DC to talk.

Re: concerned mom-DC has not said dada/mama yet
I wouldn't worry at all. As everyone else said, they're babbling (which is practicing their sounds).
For the milestones, you go by their developmental age, not their chronological age. They're really 6.5 months developmentally.
Also after the 1-2 year mark, they catch up to their chronological age.

Re: concerned mom-DC has not said dada/mama yet
If you're worried at 8 months, I should most definitely be worried considering DD is 15 months and doesn't say any real words besides mama and dada unless you consider gagagkakakttaaammmmnnnnaaa a word

I wouldn't worry - my girl was a late talker, but once she started, it was a complete and total explosion.

my niece is 11 months old and i don't think she started saying momma/daddy until she was 10 months old. But she loved to talk in her foreign language before that!
