Re: considering working part time - would you do it?

i work part time now, 3 days a week, from 8:30-2:30-3. I am so happy and lucky that I have the ability to do this with my profession. Yes, i obviously dont make as much as i could have if i worked 5 days, but i do make a good amount of $$$. That's the only reason i went back to work after my DS, it wouldn't have made sense for me to just stay at home. Plus my SIL watches my son 2 days so i only pay for a day of daycare (and that's only $46.50 a day-i get a discount and was lucky to find a place that would take him only one day). Next year when he's 2, she wont be watching him anymore, but i think the 3 days in a daycare will still be good for him. and my SIL rocks and already offered to watch my next DC 2 days too (i'm not even TTC yet LOL). Because everything worked out so well (the hours, pay and daycare situation) that whats really helped me and my DH make the decision for me to stay working part time after my DS. You have to really weigh whats imp't to you and your DH and if it makes sense to your situation, financially, emotionally, etc
Good luck!!.Chat Icon

To be honest, I didn't read all of the responses but wanted to offer my 2 cents.

Coming from a SAHM who took a 70k paycut to do so.....best decision we ever made!

I understand you are talking about cutting back 1 day and some people would say "Just work it and have the $$ in your pocket" I disagree.

You only get 1 shot at this, and if you feel you would enjoy your parenting experience more (and miss the cutie less) than go for it 100%. You will slowly find ways to make up for the small pay cut.

Of course, all of this being said as long as you can pay your responsibilities with the small decrease in salary (rent, cc bills, utilities, etc).

I'm surprised your writing this, you seemed excited to go back to work. I know how hard it is though Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Honestly, our babies are so young at this point and they don't even know we're gone! If I were you I'd continue working a little longer FT and try to aggressively go after debt/savings and then maybe in a few months I'd go down to 4 days. But you have to do what you are comfortable doing. personally I'd rather make sacrifices (like clothes shopping) then work, but unfortunately these days it's like work or don't eat Chat Icon

Re: considering working part time - would you do it?

I was a total workaholic and very career minded. I swore I would be OK putting her in daycare at 8 weeks.. Well I wasn't and I took a huge pay cut to work part time from home and be with DD. It is difficult and frustrating at times but totally worth it to me in the end.

Maybe you can find ways to save a bit of money and make it work, clip coupons, change car insurance.

Only you can decide what is right for your family. Good luck! It's a hard decision.

i know, me too! Chat Icon Chat Icon

for those who asked: i work for the county so flex time and working from home are not options i have available to me. trust me i would have brought that up long ago Chat Icon

i think at this point, he is so well taken care of by my sister that i don't think i will ask to work part time. as much as i am dying to stay home with him, the $$ issue is just too big. Chat Icon

it's still on the table though, so who knows what will happen down the road. Chat Icon

of course i could change my mind when i have to go to work again tomorrow Chat Icon

Re: considering working part time - would you do it?

if it were me, I would LOVE to work pt and it would be worth the pay cut. we are living in a small coop and not in a huge rush to buy a home. even if it takes an extra year, what is that in the scheme of things? not much but the extra time you get to spend w/ dc is priceless. I can not work PT where I am ,it's already been asked by another coworker so I won't ask. but life woudl be so much better if I could just do 4 days :o*(

would you be able to work part time for a few months maybe and then eventually go back to full time? this way it will give you some more time with him while hes younger.

If it would mean tightening your belt, but you could still keep your head above water, personally I say go for it....but that's just my personality. If the money situation worries you and it's something that will truly affect you, then maybe it's not something you should do right now. But if you can swing it, I'm sure you would love the extra time with your DC.

Re: considering working part time - would you do it?

Just my two cents - consider whether you are really losing $160. for example do you have a far commute and are you saving on gas? maybe not buying lunch, etc. It may not be as much as you think in the end. I work 3 days a week but it only effected my salary not my vacation days, benefits etc.

Like others said you need to do what is best for you Chat Icon

Re: considering working part time - would you do it?

Well, I am doing it. I went down to 3 days and week it is a salary cut and plus I don't accrue as much time, but I am so happy I did it and I want to continue as long as I can, forever hopefully!

IMO, it is the best of both worlds and worth the salary cut. I love being home with Gavin those 4 days and I wouldn't give it up for anything.

But that is me, you need to do what is best for you.
