Re: constipated 4 week old.
Just remember that the definition of constipated is what it looks like, not necessarily the frequency. My one month old went through this twice..he screamed crying while he was going and it came out like clay and quite solid
Our pediatrician has me adding one teaspoon of prune juice to his bottle and its been working like a charm! I would look out to see what her next diaper looks like and if it is soft and normal, then she may just be gassy...if the texture is hard then its definitely constipation...try the juice, its safe and does the trick. good luck!!

Is she still on breastmilk? If she is, it's quite unusual for her to be constipated from breastmilk. Not all babies go to the bathroom everyday or every other day. It's not uncommon for a baby to go 3 or 4 days without a bowel movement. Before you try prune juice, try using a rectal thermometer to take her temp. That usually helps move things along.

Does the formula have extra iron? I wouldnt' give her prune juice without checking with the pediatrician.
Try drinking a lot of water one day. Remember your breastmilk is made up of what you eat.

I do the same with Molly and she will sometimes go 3-4 days without a bowel movement. Her Ped. said it was quite normal.

No, if anything you can give her an ounce of water to help.

Prune juice is 100% ok to give a 4 week old...its only 1 teaspoon per bottle or every other bottle and its mainly sugar with a little fiber to help loosen the stool..my pediatrician recommends doing it for constipated babies and so far its been great for us. We tried water and he hated drinking it and didn't seem to do much anyway.

I guess every pediatrician has a different take on this because mine was against the fruit juices so young. I would call your Dr and ask what they prefer.........

You're completely right, every doc is different..i would just hate to think that mine is giving me advice that would hurt him. She said in that quantity it won't hurt his belly only help the constipation. Also...my son was pooping what looked like hard clay ..very upsetting to see him scream as he went to the bathroom. I hope he gets on track soon so i don't have to add the juice anymore!
