Constipation! Prune juice and newborns?
My DS has had bad constipation lately (due to the formula). But i was wondering... is there anything we can do to help them or to help them along?
Can we give him prune juice?
ETA: he's 2 weeks old

Re: Constipation
When my daughter was a newborn she had terrible constipation (and was breastfed). Although the thermometer trick worked the doctor said we shouldn't do it that often or she would become dependent on it.
It got really bad at one point and the doctor recommended dark karo syrup and water. It worked a little, but not that much. She eventually grew out of it, but it took a while.
I have many friends whose children needed suppositories. I would talk to your ped.

what's the thermometer trick?
take a rectal thermometer, put some vaseline on it, insert it a little bit into the rectum, and make a slow circular motion. Works like a charm

I wouldn't without speaking to your ped, I think water helps with constipation too...an oz or so.

Re: Constipation! Prune juice and newborns?
Do not give a newborn prune juice. I would give about 2oz of water. That should work. I would call your pediatrician tomorrow & ask what else can be used. Not sure if 2 weeks is to young to try Mylicon Drops

Re: Constipation! Prune juice and newborns?
Definitely not prune juice at 2 weeks...
I know it's heart breaking - I remember those days well and I am dreading it happening again with my current pregnancy (I just know it will)...
My DDs ped said a newborn can go 7 days without a BM which I thought was beyond crazy, but I'm not a doctor. They said it's because their digestive system is so new and out of wack...

Re: Constipation! Prune juice and newborns?
My son had constipation at 2 weeks old. The doctor recommended 1 oz of water added to the formula per day. It has worked great.

2 oz of water is what the Dr suggested for my DD at 2 weeks and it worked like a charm. I would not give any type of juice, it's too early.

Re: Constipation! Prune juice and newborns?
try two table spoons water and two tablespoons of Karo syrup mixed together in a bottle three times a day thats what my doctor had DD on and it worked really well up until like a month ago (DD became immune to it) but then we started fruits so things got much better..... good luck

Re: Constipation! Prune juice and newborns?
Dr. said if DD gets constipated to take a Qtip with a little vasaline and put it in her...should help her along. Only if they go 2-3 days with no BM though.

Re: Constipation! Prune juice and newborns?
How many days has it been since he went?
Has the doctor recommended switching formulas?
I'm pretty surprised the ped said prune juice was ok for a 2 week old...that could literally be explosive and then you have to watch for dehydration...
