Re: Cord Blood Banking...
they take the blood from your umbilical cord and put it into a blood bank in case your child, or a family member ever needs it for a lifesaving measure (diferent types of cancers, etc). It is like an ins policy.

Re: Cord Blood Banking...
We are still deciding. If we don't bank it, we will definitely donate it. It just a matter of the cost.

Don't let the cost deter you, they are able to gve you price options!! I persnally know a few kids who are alove today because of cord blood banking, it is like life ins., you hope never to have to use it but it is great to have it! I would pay 1 million dollars or at least find a way to pay if i thought it could save my child or a family members life.
I get professional courtesy from Viacird because I am a medical professional, but I thin that this is worth your $. Invest in this rather than all th eother baby junk at Baby's R us that is uncecessary.

I was going to do it, and I'm upset we didn't. I had an emergency C-section, so I didn't bring it to the hospital. Next time!

We are still undecided about this. I have to read more about it. I have a magazine listing this from Viacord. The price ranges and I saw that they have special pricing plans available. There are different companies that do this. On this magazine for Viacord is listed as " Special Pricing Available: 12 month plan - $149 per month 6 month plan - $280 per month

Re: Cord Blood Banking...
I was hesitant at first, but my OB brought it up which kind of shocked me b/c my previous OB/GYN said they wouldn't state how they felt about it either way and that I had to research it and come to a conclusion for myself. At my last OB visit, my doctor highly recommended it and said he wished it was around when his children were born.
I didn't know if my OB had other motives, so we called my BIL who's a physician at Boston Medical Center to get his 2 cents. He was emphatic about gettting it (to the point where he was offerering to pay for it as a shower gift if we were considering otherwise.)
Needless to say, we're doing it.

Re: Cord Blood Banking...
I did it for both of my sons through Viacord. If (a BIG if) we had a 3rd, we'd do it again. It's definitely not inexpensive, but what is?
Annual storage fees are $90 for #1 and $125 for #2. I haggled the price down for my 2nd and saved about $400. It's a business...
ETA: What does everyone's OB charge to draw the blood and "prepare" the kit? Mine charges $200 although she waived it both times for me.

But FYI ladies delivering at Withrop... Winthrop hospital does not donate cord blood. We inquired about it on our tour and they said that they don't have a reson, they just don't do it yet.

What do you mean Winthrop doesn't donate it, you need to get your own private company to do the pick up, the hospital has nothing to do with it but collecting the sample, and then a currier picks it up within a few hrs after delivery. The hospital shouldn't matter, it is the blood bank that matters.
Just FYI- all the top notch pediatric oncologists on LI and in manhattan ecommend blood ocrd baking, i personally know 3 of them, they are 3 of my Mom;s closest friends (she is ont he board of Make A Wish)

Re: Cord Blood Banking...
We started to look into it, but Cole was born early and we didnt have it all together yet.
I guess I'm not that clear on it -- What is the benefit of banking ALL your children's instead of just the one? I thought (please correct me if I'm wrong) that they only needed a few cells to treat with, so (God forbid) more than one illness, the one cord blood could still be used. Am I wrong? How can I find out more in depth info? thanks.

Oh I see what you are saying... that if you want to donate the blood and not keep for yourself YOU have to find a place to donate it to.... I guess what they were telling me is that if you don't set up a company to deal with the blood gets trashed... Winthrop does not donate it for you.

Re: Cord Blood Banking...
This post has me thinking... just out of curiosity...for those of you donating, do you have to pay your OB to draw the blood or does the bank you're donating to cover that?

Exactly, it just becomes medical waste. Really research it though befire you make your decision, I know s many peopke who regret not doing it and once you give birth there is no way to re-collect it I kow a little girl who is 10 nowbut was diagnosed with leukemia at 3, her brother;s blood cord was banked and it was a match and it SAVED HER LIFE! If it was not for the cord blood she would not be here today!

OB has nothing to do with it, the nurse does the kit at delivery time and there is no extra cost.

In the case of a donation or in general? My OB drew the cord blood both times. I mentioned above that her fee is $200 for this "procedure".

Re: Cord Blood Banking...
Please do your own research and try not to listen to what other people say. We are not doing it for many many reasons.
And please do not let people put the guilt trip on you.
FYI: Some countries have banned private cord blood banking and only allow public banking for many reasons.
These companies prey on PG women's emotions.
I did extensive research on this topic.
