cord not falling off (bad doctor)

last week when i took grace for her 1st checkup, her cord didnt fall off, so he said if it did fall off in a week to call him back and bring her in and he will "work his magic" well today is a week later and when i went to change her this am, it was almost off but red yellow discharge everywhere and it smelt, so i called and his office was closed... so the service forwarded me to a neighboring doctor who was covering for him, which my mom took me to when i was a baby... my mom didnt like his bedside manner.... but i was worried so i went anyway... well knowing this man saw me when i was a baby 27 years ago.. he was like in his late 70's... so he looked at her and said you have to clean it... i siad i am with alcohol.. he said "where becuase i dont see it... now making me feel like an idoit and a bad mommy.. he proceded to tell me... "of course it smells, there is still blood in there from she was born", so he showed how to clean it correctly.. apparently i wasnt getting in far enough with the alcohol.... but thankful she is okay no infection, but he did make me feel like an a s s h o l e... and a bad mommy...

can't wait to go see my doctor!! hopefully her cord will fall off soon, i have to clean it now 3-4 times a day and it should fall in a few days...

she will be 3 weeks on thursday

I;m sorry the Dr. made you feel bad, that's not fair, how the he*& are you supposed to know you have to jam the qtip or whatever right down in there to clean it. I didn't know either and after the DR. showed me how to do it I wasn't as afraid to just go for it (I thought it would hurt him if I ws too rough)

You're not a bad mom at all. If they came with instructions, it would be a whole lot easier.

I know I doused that thing with rubbing alcohol because I couldn't wait for it to fall off.

You shouldn't feel like you did anything wrong! It's so difficult in the beginning of motherhood to figure out if we're doing things exactly right. It's not like these babies come with a how-to-manual.

I am glad your DC is okay. Don't worry...the cord will dry up and fall off. It's nothing to panic about.
As for that pediatrician, I am glad he's not your regular doctor.

Re: cord not falling off (bad doctor)

he sounds like a real jerk. I never cleaned DD's cord. It fell off on its own after a couple of weeks. I would have been concerned if I were you too.

Re: cord not falling off (bad doctor)

My doctor told me its not necessary to clean the cord with anything - to just leave it alone...

Yike. Asher's cord took almost a month to fall off. I was beginning to think it would never happen.

Re: cord not falling off (bad doctor)

YOu are NOT a bad mommy!!!! dont even think that!!!!

my dr. never told me at the hospital or the nurses how to clean it so I never did and about 2 weeks after she was born I noticed it almost hangin off with a yellow discharge so I twisted it carefully and waited to see if it hurt her, I also kept flicking at it too. It came off and I cleaned it with a plain qtip, I never used alcohol. didnt get infected either, in fact dr. said it looked good.

I cleaned that darn thing until you could eat off it (well, not really but you know what I mean!) and it still took a month to fall off. Somtimes it just takes longer than others Chat Icon Chat Icon

I have to ask, was this Dr in Miller Place? Don't listen to him, my Dr. yelled at me because he thought DS had a yeast infection! Chat Icon when he was checking him one appointment. He told me to clean him better! I told him he should have his eyes checked, it's baby powder! Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: cord not falling off (bad doctor)

OH AND, my aunt is a nurse practitioner/ midwife, she said that studies have shown that alcohol really does nothing to make your cord fall off faster, and that they still tell you to use it because it ensures the parent will check for infection. You can't prevent all infections with alsohol by the way. They can still happen. Chat Icon Chat Icon
