Cost of NICU Stay
Good Morning Ladies,
Not sure why i am posting this but I just added up the insurance claims for my twins' stay at NSUH NICU. For two babies, one stayed for 5 weeks 3 days, and one stayed for 5 weeks 5 days, the grand total.....
$825,982 , yep over 3/4 of a million!
Thank goodness for insurance. No CO-Pays either! I LOVE BCBS!

Re: Cost of NICU Stay
It was insane the bills we got. Unfortunatly I had to pay 10% up to 2500 for the family which sucked and I was not expecting, plus hospital $100 for all 3 of us, and then when we had to bring my son back for surgery.
All in all much less but still I was ****** I had to lay out about 3,000 for it.
And the funny thing is, the hopital probabyl won't get anything near that 800,000 that they billed the insurance company.

Re: Cost of NICU Stay
I was peeking at this post and WOW!!!!
I wonder what happens to people who don't have insurance. Its not like they can kick them out of the hospital and not likely someone w/o insurance can realistically be expected to pay this!

Re: Cost of NICU Stay
My DD was in the NICU for a week, not a long stay but still $$$$.
Thankfully, I have what is probably the best insurance in the state, I never saw any itemized bill or even a statement. I've always been curious as to how much it was.
For those that don't have insurance coverage, such a major medical expense can really bankrupt, even the most financially responsible family

Re: Cost of NICU Stay
just wanted to mention, that if the baby is going to be in the hospital for more than 30 days, they are automatically covered by medicaid. (medicare.. i never get them straight) but point is, if they were in the hospital long enough the co-pays and such should have been covered by medicaid.
my son spent time in 3 hospitals after birth. (local to children's hospital with NICU to second children's hospital out of state for surgery) and we only saw bills from one hoslital stay which was 3.5 weeks, 9 days in the NICU, rest on a regular floor... and that bill alone was 129k. we know our regular insurance picked up about 95k of that. don't know what medicaid caught afterward, but we didn't pay anything to any of the hospitals, or ambulance companies than moved him.

Re: Cost of NICU Stay
Hospitals dont get what they billed, they get the contracted amount with the insurance company BUT, the reason they bill so significantly over that amount is everything over the contracted rate is a tax write off for the hospital, which clearly adds up to a lot of money saving for them
Just so you guys know, hospitals literally bill for everything and not at cost, like gauze, q tips, etc....
(i worked for an insurance company)
