Costa Rica vs. Dominican Republic in May?
I have never been to either, but I'm dying for another tropical vacation. DH and I originally wanted to do DR, but my SIL went to Costa Rica last February and loved it. We preferably want to do an all inclusive since Couples Swept Away in Jamaica spoiled us ROTTEN. But, we're open to other affordable options. We usually cruise, but we're looking for something different this time. I'm open to any and all suggestions! TIA!

I've been to DR and it's nice, but I am dying to go to Costa Rica!! If you are adventurous... you can't compare DR to the rainforests in Costa Rica. You will have a great time either way! If you do end up going to DR, I'd only go to Punta Cana not Puerto Plata, which is the other hot spot.

I went to Punta Cana and loved it. It was all inclusive.

I went to Punta Cana and loved it. It was all inclusive.
Would you mind sharing where you stayed? Was it adults only?

i went to DR a few years ago and it was a nice vacation. we stayed at an all inclusive and had a great time.I am headed to costa rica in feb and i cannot wait!!!!!
IMO, they are both two different vacations and so it depends what you are looking for...
I found DR was more relaxing...go to an all inclusive and have no need to leave the resort
Costa Rica on the other hand has the relaxing element but also a ton to do. rainforest hikes, zip lining, white water rafting, hot springs, waterfall rappelling, etc
DH and i booked two week sin Costa Rica so we can get the best of both worlds...a week of adventure and a week of relaxing on the beach.

Ive never been to costa rica, but I had an entire trip planned out and almost booked it when we decided to do california instead..but I agree with the above poster. I've been all over DR and would say if youre looking for a super cheap relaxing vaca in an all inclusive, DR is your best bet. There are tons of adventrous things to do, but its not as cool sounding as CR.
If you wanted to go adventurous in DR, I'd recommend samana, punta cana and jarabacoa, but they are all on totally different parts of the island. Its relatively easy to travel by bus or hire a driver. But in my opinion those are the most intersting parts.
For CR, we were going to do the Arenal Mountains which also has zip lining and a few days on the beach. I'm pretty sure there's only one all inclusive on the beach but I may be wrong. There's also a cloud forest I wanted to visit but there wasnt enough time in our fake trip for that. Let me know if you want to know about DR. I've spent way too much time there for my own good lol.

we went to the dominican last february, and the weather was amazing-we stayed at the riu palace punta cana, and we booked it through cheapcaribbean.com
this year we're going to costa rica in february, and we're staying at los altos de eros, but only because we won the hotel for free, but i can let you know :) the town in playa tamarindo

Hmmm you guys have given me a lot to think about. It might have to be DR in May or Costa Rica in August since that sounds like it'll be more of an expensive trip. I'm always down for adventuring, but I definitely want a little relaxing in there as well! DH has been talking about Costa Rica a lot, so maybe it would be worth it to hold off and save up a little extra cash. We had just wanted to do something around our 2 year wedding anniversary since we basically didn't even acknowledge our first year anniversary. lol!

Hands down Costa Rica. Went to DR about 5 6 years ago maybe longer; just went to Costa Rica for my honeymoon.
DR was a nice inexpensive trip lots of eating & drinking there are adventure things to do..we went atv riding.
Costa Rica we went horseback riding; zip lining; did the mud baths; sunset cruise; river boat tours. Volcano you name it! Oh and Lots of drinking. Loved seeing the monkeys all over the resort and when driving through the towns.
We spent 8 days there; and 3 days just at the resort doing NOTHING but laying out by the beach; the pool; eating lunch etc. The other days we did activities.
I see DR more as a quick get away-long weekend there is enough for me. CR I'd do a full week there's just so much to see/do and especially if you want to combo it with relaxing!

I've done both... CR once and DR 3x... obviously, I prefer DR.
CR is more nature-y and adventurous.. DR for me is relaxing on the beach with a drink

I am fascinated by Costa Rica and hope to get there one day so that's my vote! There's good value there. That said, there's also good value in the DR but I think you'll have a much more authentic experience in CR. Depends what you're looking for. Can't beat the AI's in the DR. We stayed at Excellence Punta Cana and loved it so much that we stayed an extra day.

Hmmm it is, but they said the same thing about Jamaica in September. We had sooooooooo little rain it was laughable. But it is risky.

My coworker's from CR and she told me never to go in August. I know how the rainy season is in DR and St. Lucia, which is not bad at all, but I guess I'll take her word for it.
