metformin is used in patients that has poly cystic ovarian sympton and for patients that are over weight with irregular periods and helps to regulate your period so you can monitor when you ovulate in order to concieve.

Re: could someone explain why you take metforin (?) when ttc
Metformin is prescribed for women with PCOS (polyscystic ovarian syndrome). This means that the follicles inside the ovaries do not fully mature and therefore to not come out of the ovary (ovulation). The reason for this anovulation is because the LH/FSH ratios are messed up. Also in many PCOS pts, their testosterone is very high, causing things like hair on the face and acne. The reason for these hormone imbalances is thought to be a problem with the uptake of insulin, hence the taking of metformin. The hope is that with the metformin, the hormones will start to be in the right balance and ovulation will occur "naturally," allowing these women to TTC.

And to add to what the others said, it may also help girls with PCOS who do not have a problem with insulin (like me!)
...hopefully!
