counter top question
We are in the process of redoing our kitchen and we just started talking about countertops. We do not plan on living in the house for more than 3 years, do you think formica countertops are very outdated? Should we just s u ck it up and go with the granite. TIA!!!

Re: counter top question
i have custom formica counters that we put in 4 years ago. I love them, I don't like granite so for me they are perfect. I think if your kitchen is new & updated buyers would realize they could change the counters if they dislike formica. The only other factor would be your neighborhood/your home's price range. I think in homes 500k & up people expect granite or silestone. JMO

this is always a great options. also you could do corian or silestone. I wouldn't spend too much money since you know you aren't going to be there for too long. GL!

Re: counter top question
We updated our kitchen when we moved in and decided to go with formica countertops and are very happy with them.
They have a marbly design on them so people don't even know that they are formica until I tell them.
We are planning to stay in our home for awhile but, only did a partial renovation at this point (we will do a full renovation eventually - in 5-10 years or so) and we couldn't justify the extra cost for a more expensive countertop at this point.

Ditto.
The places I would suggest no one ever skimp out on regardless of how long you intend to stay are the bathrooms and kitchen.

This is exactly what we did. We needed new appliances and countertop b/c the previous owners' were so gross. I like our formica! (for now)

Re: counter top question
I think it depends on where you are, and what your specific area is like.
In a really expensive neighborhood, I think natural stone is still expected.
Also, have you looked into wholesalers? There's a place near my that has granite installed for 19.99 a square foot. Its not the super high end fancy kind, but its nice looking. We're probably going to do a plain black in our new place for not a whole lot more than laminate.

Re: counter top question
We just built a home and we put in custom formica (its Wilsonart brand) that has a shiny/marbley finish. It actually looks like granite and its more practical than real granite because you can cut on it without worrying about damaging it. I love it.

Re: counter top question
Thank you all for your answers It is an average community, definitely not high end, but still nice. I live in Rockland County. I am going to go look at some formica today and see what the savings would be. thx

We did the same. The old countertops were disgusting and we needed a quick, cheaper fix. We plan on doing a bigger kitchen remodel in the next 5 to 10 years, although everyone loves our formica countertops now.
