Cow Harbor 10K question

Is this race as hilly as I keep reading? I have done a bunch of 5Ks this spring/summer and am looking to do a 10K this fall. I am not sure if this is a good one for me or not. I am in NJ but have a ton of family on LI, so it could be in LI or NJ.

Re: Cow Harbor 10K question

It is pretty famous for its hills - especially the James Street hill.

I run hills often and live in the general area so I have gotten used to running hills, but if you are not used to hills and plan to do Cow Harbor, I recommend training on a few!

It's a GREAT race though. Yes, it is a competitive one with a lot of elite runners participating, but they truly welcome all runners and the crowd and atmosphere is awesome. It was the first 10K I ever did - and only my second race ever - and I was hooked!

Re: Cow Harbor 10K question

for LI - yes, it's hilly, but it's only about 120 feet net difference.

the first mile is a good downhill, the second mile is all up and the last 1/4 is a doozy, the third is flat, the fourth is a downhill (steepish in parts), the fifth is a steady uphill until the last little bump up, the last mile is downhill.

with the exception of James Street hill (mile 2), it is actually a pretty fast course. Ryan Hall has the course record and Jason Lehmkuhle has run it a few times.

If you get a chance, they hold training runs on Wednesday nights (starting tomorrow) at 6, so you can get a feel for it. but there are no headphones allowed as it's open to traffic.

Re: Cow Harbor 10K question

Sorry to hijack, but quick question for Erica -

If I do the training run, online it says to join the group with the pace I hope to run at race day, not what I run now. Is that accurate? I can't make it to the first two but want to go to the last four if I can, and just want to make sure I don't burn out by mile 3!!

They will have pace charts each week that will guide you to which pace group to join. They go from under 6 min/mile-12+ for race day. The pace will be significantly slower the first week and gets a bit faster each week - never gets to race pace though...so dont worry about that. You can change groups week by week until you find the right training pace for you. You can go at your own pace though...people usually thin out by the first mile. The slowest two groups only run 3.5 miles the first two weeks.

Not sure how long I will be able to do it, but if you see a big pregnant woman handing out water - that will be me.
