Cramp in calf when running

Hi all - I'm kind of new to this board.

Every time I go running, I seem to get a cramp in the back/side of the calf of my left leg. This has been going on since summer, and I've had to take some time off from running because of it, but every time I start up again, it's back. It also bothers me when I take classes at the gym (cardio kickboxing). I stretch before and after I run, and I'm wondering if anyone has any ideas of what this can be from??

Thanks!!

i tend to get them if i haven't exercised in a while. i also get them if i have not stretched and warmed up enough and had enough water to drink.

Definately more water. Also, try to warm up before you run. Maybe a light jog or fast walk...try to do at least 5 minutes. You don't have to stretch before, but it's helpful. Definately stretch AFTER! Good luck!Chat Icon

Oh, are you running on an incline? That might help because it takes a lot of stress off your calves/shins because it uses your hams and glutes. Another thing is try taking shorter strides. This way there is less stress on your legs.

I agree with everything said prior but one additional thought is to maybe try this product.

It's a message stick that you can use to work out the kinks in your calf muscle. I use it on my calves since they tend to get really tight when I train and cause strain on my achilles. The product looks silly but it really works out those sore and tight muscles really anywhere on the body.

Everything the above posters have said, plus I've heard that bananas are great for leg cramps.
