Crashing here..ladies who hyphenated their last names
I thought it was a good idea but now i'm not so sure. I wanted to be able to use my maiden name at work but married name socially.
The Social security office said they dont use hyphens and Today I have to go to get a new drivers license so I guess I have to use my new hyphenated name.
I thought i would be able to use both interchangeably. Its a problem for me b/c I didn't want to have to sign every prescription at work using both names...Then I called the town of hempstead and the said the only way to change my marriage license is to get a new one and have another ceremony. How do you go about using your hyphenated name?

I personally would not do this. My names are both too long. I sign my name all day long & long name was no good. I feel like taking Dhs name we are more of a family. It was a huge PITA to Change my nursing license etc.

Re: Crashing here..ladies who hyphenated their last names
I know people who made their middle name their maiden name and their last name their married name. That would only work if you were willing to give up your middle name.

I hyphened my name for the same reason...I wanted maiden for work and married for everyday use.
My name is officially hyphenated on all my "official" paper work.

Re: Crashing here..ladies who hyphenated their last names
I put a space between my maiden name and DH's last name. I just use his last name but my driver's license and passport have both last names on them.
In NYS as long as you are not trying to defraud people, you can adopt whatever name you want. If you want to just use his name, just use his name for everything. Your SS Card and license will have both on them, but you can just have his on all your credit cards, etc.
Even though legally I have two last names, all my cc's are in his last name only. I flew last week and my ticket just had his last name. No one blinked at the airport even.

this is what i did on my marriage license. i still haven't legally changed any of my documents, because i wasn't sure how i wanted to go about using the name. can you use either last name if there is just a space or do you have to use the last-last name (which would be your married name)?

Re: Crashing here..ladies who hyphenated their last names
I didn't take my DH's last name due to the fact that I didn't want to change my name professionally.
However, I was told by the Town Clerk when I went for my marriage license that if I didn't take his name on the marriage license, I wouldn't be able to change it unless I went through the court system to get a legal name change.

On my driver's license and SS card it says Last Last (with a space). All my credit cards just say his last name on them, not my maiden (or "first") last name. None of the documents I've had changed have a hyphen on them at all.
HTH!

Re: Crashing here..ladies who hyphenated their last names
I did! BUT people don't change their last names when they get married in my country of origin. Your name is what is give to you at birth and people just dont see why it should be changed at marriage. I thought hyphenating was a good compromise. I love it and I'm glad I did it. I would feel weird changing my last name and being Mrs. so and so. PLUS I'm the only daughter my father has I thought it was a nice tribute to keep his name.

Re: Crashing here..ladies who hyphenated their last names
I hyphenated my last name and on my SS card it IS hyphenated. I don't know why they told you they don't.
I just have to say that it has been the biggest PITA ever when travelling (domestically...my passport hasn't reached expiration yet).
