Crashing with Birth Cert Question

Hi Ladies,

Sorry to crash but i am trying to get an idea of how soon we can travel internationally once the baby arrives. I am due April 10th and i am hoping all going well i can travel to visit my family and have the christening by the end of May. The passport office says i can get an expedited passport in 2 - 3 weeks. But i am wondering how long it will take to get the Birth Cert to apply for the passport?

Any bddt ladies able to help?

TIA.

Re: Crashing with Birth Cert Question

I got DS's SS card and BC within three weeks of his birth but was warned it COULD take much longer.

Re: Crashing with Birth Cert Question

DS was born mid October and I had the birth certificate from NYC by the first week of November. But it was almost a month before I had his social security number which I think you need for a passport too. IMO, you would be cutting it very close or not at all if you deliver late or if they come later then expected. Also, would the ped recommend certain shots be given before it is safe, in their opinion, for your little one to travel??

I got DS' birth certificate about a month after he was born. There was a snafu with the SS card (the hospital never applied for it for me and made it seem like it was a SS error not a hospital error) and it took almost 3 months.

Re: Crashing with Birth Cert Question

Thanks ladies. I am not a US Citizen so i had no idea about any of this. That throws another waiting period in there for the SS#.

I just need to get an idea of how long it all takes so i can "try" to plan things out.

I will certainly be speaking with the doctor before we go anyway but from what i have heard it should not be a problem as long as baby has no problems. We would not go against the doctor.

Thanks again.

Re: Crashing with Birth Cert Question

It took 2-4 weeks to get his original birth certificate, but it had a huge error on it and it took us many many many months to get it finally corrected. Put it this way, my son was born first week of March and we didn't get his correct birth certificate until mid August I think. It was horrible.

We got the ss card about a month after he was born.
