crate training... how long would you continue?
Okay so some of you might remember my struggle with crate training and Jedi...
well here's my question... jedi hates the crate. HATES IT. We've been at this for 2 months now trying everything humanly possible and he still HATES it. And when i mean hates it... i mean he cries ALL night long.
So how much longer would you continue to try this? How much longer should i do this before i give up (thinking of giving up now)?
I just don't know how many more sleepless nights i can get? I'm a light sleeper and i can't fall asleep with him crying... even when he's in a different room with the door closed. Even with a sound machine, i just can't sleep.

We gave up with Bella in her crate at night after 3 weeks because we weren't getting any sleep. She still however goes in her crate during the day (with no problem whatsoever) I guess she just wanted to be with us at night.

If Jedi is housebroken I would have no problem letting him sleep either confined to a room he can't destroy, or in your room.

True to what posters said above.....if you are still worried about him chewing or something, maybe you could put him in your room in a "pen".....

Re: crate training... how long would you continue?
is he house broken yet? if so maybe leave the crate door open, that way he doesn't feel confined to it all night...or maybe putting some toys in there at night to keep him busy? I'm sorry you are having so many sleepless nights...I'm a light sleeper myself and the one week that it took for Morgan to get used to her crate was horrible for me, I can only imagine after two months!

no i'm not worried about chewing or anything, it's just that he's not 100% housebroken yet. Close, but not enough. Plus the fact that you're "supposed to crate train." I know the benefits of it and the disadvantages, but what am i supposed to do? I mean i've tried everything.

yeah see we put his favorite blanket in there, a kong stuffed with peanut butter, 2 soft toys and 2 hard toys. So he's got plenty. We also don't say a word to him when he's in there either. We cover the crate with a blanket (3/4 of it) and everything. It's even in our bedroom and he can see us (i tried the whole putting him next to the bed or sticking your finger in the crate... that didn't work).

i dont' know to be honest with you. We've never tried it. Well i mean he can't jump off our bed yet... too little so we wouldn't have to worry about him going to the bathroom in our room... just our bed.

Re: crate training... how long would you continue?
the other thing that concerns me is... we put a blanket in his crate. He started biting and eating the blanket when he got really mad. We put a normal crate bed in and he started eating that too. So what on earth do we do about that? I already had a cat have to have surgery for eating something and i'd rather not have that happen to Jedi.

Re: crate training... how long would you continue?
I was just going to ask if you tried letting Jedi out of the crate yet since you posted this ? a few days ago, but I guess not....
Spray whatever you don't want him to eat with bitter apple, and/or put a few drops of Listerine on it.

Nope we haven't given up yet. I really get to the point where i want to, but i'm not a good quitter! I don't give up easily on things and i guess i keep hoping that he'll like it & make it easier on us one day.

okay so i soaked his little bed thingy in bitter apple last night and i put a few blankets over it in his crate. Well this morning he wanted to get up at 4am and i guess was a little mad... so he destroyed the bed! We have to throw it out now and i'm sure he ate some of the stuffing that was in it.
So what do we do? not put anything in his crate?

we already do. oooh I see. I don't have too much terrier experience, but I have heard that the chewing is not uncommon. Have you tried running the dog ragged before bedtime? I know of a friend who uses a laser pointer for about a 1/2 hour before bed to tire her dog out.
When my Pug chewed, and the Bitter Apple did not work we made a solution with both Curry & water, and another with Cayenne Pepper & water. Maybe that will help?

oh i did tire him out yesterday. He played with our neighbors 2 labs for like 40 minutes and then i took him to the tennis courts for 30 minutes. So he was all tired out and he had no problems going into the crate. It's at 4:30am when he gets up that he starts eating stuff because he's mad that we won't let it him out at that time.
