Crawling
OK, my 6 month old is crawling on his stomach. I've heard that it's normal, but I'm not comfortable with it. It makes me feel like I'm not doing enough to make his legs strong. I fear he will be delayed in walking. My older son crawled on his knees and was walking shortly before his first birthday. I try to put him on his knees to crawl, but he lays down on his stomach and pulls himself across the floor. Is there something I can do to help him build up the strength in his legs and help him crawl on his knees?

Re: Crawling
There is nothing wrong with it. Different kids crawl different ways. My DD crawled the army crawl for a while and then went to the "regular" crawl.
Kids don't even need to crawl to walk. Crawling isn't considered a true milestone. Don't worry, I'm sure all is fine.

Re: Crawling
Jake is STILL doing this at 10 months. And he can hold himself up on all fours really well. Just drops to his belly when it's time to move. I don't know if he's ever going to crawl the "normal" way. He's managed to become very good at the military crawl.

Re: Crawling
I don't think it's a problem. My daughter is 8 months and *still* doesn't crawl at all...she rolls all over the house! I am not too worried.

Re: Crawling
Ds does this as well and he is 7.5 months.... he also will only go backwards...
Some children never crawl at all.... its not even considered a milestone!

Re: Crawling
Emily is 7 months and isn't even crawling yet. She has been right on target or even just ahead with everything but is not crawling. She does dig her nails into the carpet and pulls herself, but for the most part she rolls as her main mode of transportation. Just the fact that your child is doing some sort of crawl is pretty good if you ask me!

Re: Crawling
Julia was doing that to around 8 mts, she would crawl a little then fall on her belly, now at 10 mts shes crawling all over the place, can't rest for a second.

Re: Crawling
Thanks. I guess I shouldn't worry so much. I just don't want him to fall behind. I didn't know crawling isn't a milestone, I still don't understand it. I guess that saying, "you have to crawl before you can walk" is wrong.

Nope- not an official milestone...
Here's a blurb from a article I read:
"Your baby will have already learnt to sit without support and roll; crawling is the next step. If you look at most formal developmental milestone and learning scales, you may find that crawling is left off of them. This is due to the wide range of times and methods babies may use to learn to crawl.
At about six to eight months most babies will learn to balance on their hands and knees. Babies work out how to move forwards and backwards from this position by pushing off with the knees. However some children never crawl because they get comfortable with some other method of locomotion. Instead they bottom shuffle, slither on their tummies or go straight to walking. It does not matter how your baby gets around, it is getting mobile that is important. "
Every baby is different.... dont stress over it!

What you can do is relax, and let him figure it out on his own. You can't push development. He's absolutely fine!!
