It will be interesting to see the outcome of this. I really hope they do a follow up.

Although i would like to donate my organs, this is why i dont put it on the back of my licence. i told my family that god forbid something happens to me, they can give permission but not until they know for sure i am gone.

He was a minor, his family gave permission and now they are changing their minds, probably due to guilt.
The title of this article is rather inflammatory, the hospital did not kill him for his organs, they didnt smash him over the head wit ha hammer or something.
Perhaps they did miss a step in protocol and did not "officially" declare him brain dead, but I seriously doubt that hopsital staff are going around trying to prematurely harvest organs from teenagers. I'm sure it was well know that this boy had no hope of recovery, but now his family is second geussing that because of their guilt and sadness.

Yeah...I was getting the same vibe.
I didn't see the interview but going by the article.
The wife didn't sign the form and the father sounds like he came to the decision on his own.
I decided to sign the paper for organ donation. I signed that alone. My wife had no part of that."
If that's the case, I hope they can find peace in the decision, knowing the organs saved lives. (I'm assuming they did)

Oh come on now, give me a break! Hospitals have absolutely NO INCENTIVE at all to risk killing someone only to save their organs.
This comes down to a parent who signed the waiver and now has regrets, and those regrets are manifesting in creative illusions that are so far from the reality of what really happened. The hospital was already cleared of any criminal negligence.
Remember, just because someone CAN sue, and an attorney takes the case, does not mean that the case is valid. Virtually anyone can sue on a whim on any basis really - and a good bulk of lawsuits are meritless.
I can guarantee the attorney handling this case is just fishing for an easy settlement.

ITA. A BS case like this is going to make people change their minds about being donors, and more people will die who are on transplant lists. There are a lot of steps involved in organ donation, its not like they are declared brain dead in the ER and then off to the OR the next minute.
I would love to hear the whole story and see why the father feels that his son was not dead before they took his organs. I'm sure he is grief stricken and feels guilty and that is why he is trying to place blame on the hospital.

I think Dad did what he knew was the right thing to do, but since he signed the paperwork without DW, now she's putting the blame on him, so he has to redirect and blame the hospital.
Many people need to blame someone when a loved one dies, especially a child. I will hopefully never understand what they are going through, but blaming the hospital, and possibly removing potential life-saving organs from availability (by making people afraid of being on the donor list), and putting other peoples' lives at risk isn't the way to handle your grief.

I hated how they quoted the family in the article, saying they wanted someone to take responsibility for killing their child. Their child was not murdered!! He died due to an accident. Give me a break!!

Why on earth would this story make anyone change their minds about donating their organs? Do you really think hospitals are going to kill patients, exposing themselves to massive lawsuits and criminal charges? sounds like a bad horror movie plot..
I saw nothing in this article that indicated the hospital did anything wrong. It sounds like the parents are having understandable conflicting feelings over their son dying and are looking to place blame somewhere.

I work in a hospital and have been involved in MANY cases where the patients have been organ donors. There are strict rules in place and I can't imagine anyone NOT following the rules. The people who harvest the organs along with the organ donation program wouldn't even consider taking the organs of someone who is not brain dead. The fact that he wasn't "pronounced dead" until after his organs were taken is because he was kept alive by mechanical ventilation and aritificial life support. You can't pronouce somone dead until their heart stops beating.
It's sad because it's clear this family is having regrets

Thank you for explaining this so clearly. I am very sorry that instead of being able to somehow find peace and comfort in their decision, that this family instead is reeling in guilt. However, the media has really taken this story completely out of context and slapped a really scary title onto it. I just hope people will take to time to read the article and realize that thinking a hopsital would try to harvest your organs rather than save your life is an irrational fear.
