Crazy Vacation Idea?
I really want to take DD on our usual vacation to Key West. It takes us about 24 hours to get there. I figure it would take us a little bit longer. She would be 18 months at the time - we have gone with our dog so I figure we would have to stop just as many times (LOL!) We leave early in the morning and usually make it to Jacksonville in one day but I was thinking of looking for a hotel in South Carolina instead, to make it a shorter drive and split it up.
The place we stay has a small kitchen. The only part I am worried about is the gross hotels on the side of the highway. We usually just stay for about 5-6 hours to rest up but we would have to stay longer with DD there.
I don't know, I think it would be a great vacation although not particularly relaxing. . .DD does great in the car. . . is this crazy?

Re: Crazy Vacation Idea?
not crazy- my parents used to do that with us every year to visit my grandparents in south florida and we were fine- how is AM in the car- have you done long trips with her before?
you could also take the train part of the way or fly maybe if you can get a decent fare

Re: Crazy Vacation Idea?
I have never done a long trip with her before, I think the longest was a 2 hour trip that turned into a 4 hour trip LOL she just hangs out - by then maybe I will get her a DVD player. I would sit back there with her just in case she needed anything. She LOVES to sleep in the car so thats a plus!

Re: Crazy Vacation Idea?
Can you fly?
I mean Ty is REALLY good in the car, but we just took a trip to Boston it took us 5 hours with traffice and yeah...he wasnt into it AT ALL. He got so bored every toy i gave him he like for about a minute and was done....slept for some of it, just was NOT what i thought he was gonna be like. I couldnt even imagine 24 hours stopping or not is really long in the car. IMO. I am SOO glad we decided to fly to florida next month, bc i dont think he would have EVER lasted that long.

Re: Crazy Vacation Idea?
Flying isnt an option b/c we are trying to keep cost down and DH is a horrible flyer LOL like really bad. . . he has to be knocked out basically and I can't really handle him AND the baby.
I know gas is expensive but flying into Florida would mean renting a car ( as we travel all over the keys ) and it would add up!

What about the auto train? You drive down to virginia then get on and take the train the rest of the way and then you could drive the rest of the way- I dont know if its expensive though

Re: Crazy Vacation Idea?
Honestly, the idea of it makes me want to kill myself Mabel has about a 2 hour carseat limit, so we'd be stopping A LOT and for a lonngg time, it would take forever to get there. I feel like once I got there it would be so much more work than fun for me that it wouldn't be worth it at all....
We talked outselves out of our annual trip that's only three hours away because the amount of stuff we need, the constant work it takes to tend to her, and the car trip made it all not worth it.
You wanted honest opinions, right?

Re: Crazy Vacation Idea?
I think you will be fine in the car! We just drove with DS to Maine and he was fine. We bought new toys and had someone sit in the back with him. There were times that he was done with the car but we stopped a lot. On our way back we found a shopping area with Barnes and Noble. He got to play with a train set there and crawl around with books. I can recommend some places to stop right off the beltway in N. VA (it is about 4 hours into the drive for you).

This would be my honest opinion as well (especially the part about the thought wanting to make me kill myself ) BUT that is because I have a child who is NOT good in the car. Even a 1/2 trip is BAD news for us. 15 minutes is her high limit. So it really depends on the child. You say she is great in the car, so if that is the case I would say go for it. I'd feel a lot differently if my DD was ok in the car and good for longer trips. I think in your case it could work...

Re: Crazy Vacation Idea?
It all depends on the child. DD can handle long drives, DS definitely not!
We went to NC (13 hour drive) when DD was 18months. The best advice I can give you is to leave early - like insanely early, 1 or 2am. Hopefully she will go back to sleep, and you can get a good chunk of driving in before you have to stop for gas and breakfast.

Re: Crazy Vacation Idea?
we drove to miami with luce. he was about 7-8 months old at the time.
we stopped in Sav, Ga and then Jacksonville to visit my godson/cousins, then Miami.
the hotels were fine!!!
ETA: also, not the same but we just drove 9 hours to Erie and Pittsburg.
he had his moments, but as long as you a prepared to get back there with her from time to time to play/entertain, and plan a few more stops you should be FINE!

Re: Crazy Vacation Idea?
Thanks guys - I guess it is kind of split.
It really is my favorite place and its only going to get harder (with more babies) and it is too far for us to go without her
I hope we can make this work - thanks!

Re: Crazy Vacation Idea?
I went for a wedding last year without kids and DH and I both agreed it wasn't a place we'd go with kids because travel was a PITA and the vibe on Bourbon street seemed more adult to me.

Re: Crazy Vacation Idea?
If you love it there so much I would try to make a go of it. Will you be going during high season down there? I was just there 2 weeks ago and it was hot as blazes---definitely not the time of year to take a baby.

Re: Crazy Vacation Idea?
DS will be on trip #2 down to Disney in November.. The first time was 4.5 months old.. It went better then expected.. He has done NH 4 times. 8 hours each way.... Not crazzy and it is going to be the only way to find out if she can handle it. We did 2 overnights on the first trip down.. This trip we plan on doing one over night...Get a portable DVD and plenty of little toys...Have fun!

Re: Crazy Vacation Idea?
Do it. Get her used to it now, she'll love to travel as she gets older. Priceline a nicer hotel and spend the night as opposed to just a few hrs. you'll have great pics and memories!

Re: Crazy Vacation Idea?
in my honest opinion.... at 18 months.. I think your crazy, lol. Thats when all they want to do is play and run around. I think that is way too long of a trip for that age.

Can you leave at her bedtime so she sleeps the bulk of the ride?
Like another poster said, the sooner you get them used to travel, the better - especially if it's something you guys enjoy..

Honestly, if she does great in the car, I don't see why not.
I wouldn't do it with DS, he hates being restrained in the car.

Re: Crazy Vacation Idea?
We have driven to FL from NY several times, only once with DD. Yes, you'll have to make several stops and probably go at a slower pace than usual, but it will be fine. I would suggest stopping for the night in NC rather than SC. We usually stop in Lumberton. It's almost at the border of SC and there is a wide variety of hotels and places to eat.
