creativity question... might be a silly question
as many/most of you know, i knit.
a few years ago, i fell in love with a very simple and elegant men's scarf knit pattern.
there was a lot of talk of how the designer would release the pattern for sale. i will be honest and admit that i'm a bit cheap when it comes to buying patterns... not because i don't want to pay someone for their work, it's just that i don't always get around to them quickly enough to justify the cost at the moment.
this pattern, i would buy immediately and i would pay a premium price. i like it that much.
i've written to the designer and asked about the release. i keep being told "soon" but nothing.
would i be violating any IP unwritten rules if i took the picture the designer has up on the internet as inspiration and attempted to reverse engineer it?
i wouldn't be doing it to sell the pattern, just so i can make the scarf (or a close facsimile of it) for myself.
i want to be respectful that someone else has the creativity to do this, but if he's in business... why isn't he releasing the pattern??

No way...I say go for it. They have now way to prove it. Also unless the designer is walking down the street and sees it on your neck and flips on you how would they ever know. The world is full of copycats. Plenty of websites teach you how to copy things like recipes from restaurants etc...

I don't see how it would be different from seeing something on Pinterest and trying to recreate it. Go for it. Like someone already said, there is hardly anything original anymore. Chances are it was created from something similar too.

I would say that if you have ANY doubts, just don't sell it. But I say go for it.

IP issues are very big in the knitting world... and i completely understand people wanting to get paid for their work, and i would never violate that.
since i know there are a lot of attorneys on here, i thought i'd double-check
this will be a wonderful distraction (the puzzle of trying to reverse engineer) from the stress of selling stuff, cleaning, packing, resigning, moving... oy!!
