Could you have possibly set the crockpot to cook for 8 hours on high instead of low?

I did this once - and had to throw the entire crockpot out because it was just one large charcol mess by the time we got home.

Honestly, next time I would try skipping the crockpot altogether on this recipe. If you're browning the meat first, I don't necessarily see the point of the crockpot. Why not just brown the meant, then add the remaining ingredients to the pan. I would simmer for 15 or 20 minutes to let the flavors come together and it would probably come out great.

I agree with the PP about this probably brig a good recipe for the stove top. However, I'm going to guess that there was just not enough liquid in there. One cup of tomato sauce and half a cup of ketchup is not enough. Plus the sugar in the ketchup and the brown sugar would burn.

Next time I would do it on the stove top. Sorry it didn't work out!

I agree. If doing it on the stove top you could also sautee some bell pepper, onion and a clove of garlic in there too - which adds some nice depth of flavor and bulks up the nutrition factor without having too much of an impact on the calorie count.

There could be a few different things that might have gone wrong. My first thought looking at the recipe is there is not enough liquid in the crockpot for simmering all day. You've already browned the ground beef and drained the fat (which I normally do when I put ground beef in my crockpot), but with only 1 cup of canned tomato- that isn't a lot of liquid for something that is going to be simmering all day. Especially when you're already using a lean meat.

I also had thoughts similar to the other PPs- maybe the setting was on high instead of low?

This recipe looks like it would work better on the stove than the crockpot. Sorry it didn't turn out as well as you would have liked!

Thanks!!!! I thought it was strange that the meat was browned first...like what was there to "cook" then....

Dh turned it on for me, swears he put it on low..... It def. didnt look like much liquid....next time Ill try it on the stove.... it smelt yummy, and I was looking forward to trying it...

Oh well!

I ended up eating a box of girl scout cookies in its place Chat Icon
