The thing I would want to know is whether the ship had an indoor pool otherwise you are really stuck inside for most of the trip down.

Re: Cruises out of NY in the winter....

Dh & I went to Bermuda the beginning of November & had horrible weather going down. It was cold & rainy which did not allow for us to be outside but we made the best of it. There was so much to do in the ship. Then coming back, it was ei nice, we enjoyed the pool 1 day when it was 65 air temp.

Depending on the ship, if there are a lot of things to keep them occupied at sea, the weather is not an issue.

Re: Cruises out of NY in the winter....

I just got back from that itinerary over Christmas-New Years week. The weather was mild, but not necessarily hot. As for an indoor pool, you can buy a pass to the spa pool for the week. I don't member how much it was because we had 2 kids with us so it didn't make sense. The weather can be hit or miss. You can have 40s-80s in Florida and 60-80s in Bahamas. I think it really depends in your parents are outdoor people or if they really enjoy what a cruise has to offer as far as indoor entertainment. Theres lots to do, but if they're not joiners or don't enjoy gambling they may not like it.

Personally, they are cheap for a reason... Its becuase you lose days outside where its just too cold to use the pool as you travel down and back up again.... Its def nice to not have to fly to catch the ship but its not worth it for me

The weather is usually a bit rougher too.
Personally, I wouldn't sail in January.

I agree. I also agree with another poster who said it depends on the kind of travellers they are. My DH's aunt and uncle have gone the past few winters and love it because it's less crowded and it's a vacation away from the city. They try to take a new ship everytime, though IMO the entertainment/food is usually the same anyway.

They love it, but for DH and I, we would rather fly somewhere.

Re: Cruises out of NY in the winter....

We just got back from a New Years trip. If its Royal Caribbean, its probably similar.

The weather was not hot but it was warm. We still made it into the hot tub but not the pool.

If you go with the assumption that you are just looking to escape and enjoy the cruise itself, its a good time to go and you can spend the money elsewhere. We had a great time on the ship for new years eve!

For a tropical vacation, I'd fly south.

ETA - I loved the "at sea" days the best about the trip... but I love to relax! LOL
