Crying too much?
How do you know when something is wrong? My baby boy seems to cry A LOT! He has already switched to Soy formula, but it seems like he is still really very fussy. My DH is exasperated...I handle it a bit better...but when is it too much? We have never been around a newborn. How do we know?

Re: Crying too much?
Most doctors will tell you that crying for 3 or more hours a day is excessive.
Sarah used to cry for 4 or more hours a day and was diagnosed with colic. My doctor described it as unexplainable fussiness. White noise helped. We'd put the tv on static and it would calm her down. It started at 6 weeks and ended at 3 months.

Re: Crying too much?
The "Happiest Baby on the Block" book has great tips for handling newborn crying and great information about why it is happening. How much crying are we talking about? Have you tried the swaddle yet?

Re: Crying too much?
Oh and the definition of colic is more than three hours IN A ROW on three or more days a week for at least three weeks. Three hours total across an entire day does not seem excessive to me for a newborn. I never counted (boy would that have been depressing) but I wouldn't be surprised if it was that long.

Re: Crying too much?
my daughter also cried non stop , she had horrible colic and gas. We switched her to Nutramigen formula its specially made for babies with colic and also switched to dr browns bottles...they both helped alot!!!! WE also stopped the mylcon gas drops and started giving her gripe water works 100x better then gas drops. I also noticed if i held her like a football belly side down on my forearm and bounced her gentley as i walked around the house, that would quiet her down a bit also. Good luck, i know it is so hard dealing with a fussy baby!! hang in there

I left out that it's crying in a solid block of time. My point was more that a lot of people think colic is a food/gas issue, but it's not always. Some babies just cry a lot and need more attention that others. But Sarah is a very happy baby now (6.5 months) and rarely cries. Now if I could only do something for the whining that comes with teething....

I agree about the book. I have been reading it and some of my friends swear it is the miracle book. It may be worth taking a look at. Good Luck.
