Cub/Boy scouts

Does anyone have their DS involved in either group? You always hear about and see girl scout related things (mainly cookies Chat Icon ) but not really for the boys. I'm wondering how popular it is. DS cant join for another 2 years but I'm just curious.

I'm DD's Girl Scout troop leader, but we won't get DS involved in Boy Scouts. DH & I disagree with their policy on homosexuality and refuse to support the organization in any way.

Re: Cub/Boy scouts

I would do cub scouts, but I am really unsure about having my son in boy scouts. My brother's were both in boy scouts and their leader/his sons verbally abused all of the children in their group. To the point that the group leader was brought up on charges from the scouts and dismissed from scouting. To my knowledge there was no sexual abuse, but rather mental abuse. I know each group is different but I am really reluctant to have him join boy scouts.

My nephews are in boy scouts - they love it and my SIL is very happy with it also.

DS is in cub scouts and he loves it. His den is run by us (the parents) and we are all involved in events and activities. We do the popcorn sale every year and DS takes much pride in wearing his uniform & particating in derbies/races with things he builds.

My son is a cub scout and I am his den leader. He loves it. A lot of work at times for me but I am enjoying it. The kids make me smile!

They have very clearly said homosexuals are not welcome. Den mothers have been removed, fathers have been excluded etc, due to sexual orientation.

Teens who come out are also kicked out. Just last month an Eagle Scout in Missouri came out and was fired from his job at a BSA camp and told he can't be a part of the organization any more.

They are a Christian faith based private organization and entitled to their stance, it just goes against my family's beliefs.

I'm not sure if you are aware, but Boy Bcouts and Cub Scouts are the same organization.

My son was in Scouts when he was younger. He had a lot of fun with it.

Re: Cub/Boy scouts

I actually had no idea about this policy. My god son was just made an Eagle Scout and my cousin is trying to get me to put DS in scouts when he is old enough. Now that I know this, he will not be going!

I agree completely. I have huge issues with supporting Boy Scouts for that reason.

Re: Cub/Boy scouts

Obviously every family has a right to join or not join what ever group they choose. I am not looking to debate that fact. I just want to point out the fact that within large groups of any sort there are all levels of adherence, agreement and disagreement with ?policy?.

We are very active in Cub Scouts, and have been since DS was old enough to join. We are also Roman Catholic. Do I agree 100% with the policy of both groups, absolutely not. Do we feel the good by far outweighs any negative DS may be exposed to from participating in our religion and being a part of scouting absolutely.

Now to answer the OP's question about the popularity of Boy Scouts/Cub Scouts. I can only answer for Nassau County where I know that scouting membership is growing by leaps and bounds over the last few years. Last year I had to suspend recruiting and refer some new scouts to other local packs because ours was absolutely full.

I'm not religious by any means, but aren't most religions against homosexuality as well? Our pack was affiliated with the catholic church, so it only makes sense that they aren't supportive of homosexuality.

IMHO, it is one thing to "not support" something, and quite another to be openly hostile. The Boy Scouts kick people out. Additionally, earlier this year they reaffirmed their (IMHO) discriminatory position. LINK

Re: Cub/Boy scouts

Cub Scout Packs and Boy Scout Troops are run by the families of the boys in the pack/troop and overseen by a local district and council. I can tell you for a fact that both Long Island councils take more of a dont ask dont tell stance on this subject. Will a local council executive admit that publicly, probably not if he wants to keep his job. It's a shame and I dont agree with it but I dont agreee with a lot of things that go on today. We believe the good that scouting provides our son by far outweighs our disfavor of the policy set by of a few representatives at the top of the organization.

I feel the same way and I honestly do look forward to when DS is old enough to join for the social aspect and the good things that being a scout seems to bring to the table.

What is their policy on homosexuality?

Is it a religious thing, or is it because they are trying to avoid some kind of abuse?

It was a widely reported national news story.

A few weeks ago they confirmed their stance against allowing membership to any homosexual member. It was about sexual orientation.

It wasn't about abuse. Pedophilia has nothing to do with sexual orientation. Actually, the majority of pedophiles are heterosexuals.

There were several news stories regarding gay den parents and Eagle scouts, in good standing, who were forced to resign solely on their sexual orientation.

I look at it as this... Sexual orientation is protected by the laws of this country. It falls under the same Constitutional protection as religion, ethnicity, race and gender. Much of the country is not on board with this interpretation just like they were openly and legally discriminatory to non-Protestants, many ethnic groups, African Americans, and women for much of our history. GLBT rights is the civil right debate of our time, however, just like racial discrimination is alive, well and openly broadcast in so many parts of our nation, so to is GLBT discrimination.

I can't knowingly support any organization that openly discriminates against individuals born with certain characteristics. It goes against everything I believe in and everything I try to instill in my children.

I think it's a real shame they proclaimed their recent doctrine. The program teaches so many important life skills to so many young men but this doctrine trumps everything IMO.
