Im sorry, I am generally VERY liberal but NO WAY am I paying for the bulk of this state to go to college. NO WAY. People will quit their jobs to drop their income if it will save the save them the same amount as the tuition they would have been paying.
Im sorry, go to community for 2 years and then do 2 years at 4 year SUNY if you need to save money for college.
I wish SUNY did have that program where you can lock in the current rate and prepay for your childs education, now THAT I could get on board with.
ITA!!!!
ITA!! I have NO interest in subsidizing college for everyone else AND pay for my kids tuition on top of that. This is idiotic AND if this is something they want to implement it should apply to EVERY NYS resident OR they better jack up that $125K cut off.

I'm mostly curious to know whether there will be a minimum GPA students need to maintain in order to get free tuition for subsequent years. As a high school teacher, I see a lot of people's money spent on students who don't want to be there. I believe in free and public education, but I don't personally want kids to drink themselves stupid @ SUNY Albany, skip classes, and fail on my dime. Freshman retention is poor at most colleges for this reason.
If the kids are motivated and working, then I am happy to help subsidize because I think it's good for society, especially considering what we spend to put people in jail...
My questions as well. And in my opinion, they are going to have to make their admissions requirements much stricter.
My daughter is a junior and her reaction was this: "Great, now every dumb moron can go to college right along side me. Why did I bother taking all these AP classes and getting a 4.0 GPA when now everyone can just go?" I thought it was interesting.
SUNY schools are not easy to get into so good for her for working so hard. Anyone who's going to be accepted would be doing the same. Any "moron" would be able to go to a community school but that's already the case.
I went to Stony Brook and it was very hard to get into, they required high SAT scores. I dont think that was the case for all the SUNY schools. SUNY has (had) a few known "party" schools, like SUNY Oneonta. I know people who attended and they partied more then studied lol

I don't think a dumb moron didn't go to college because they can't afford it. A dumb moron didn't go to college because they can't get into college because of their grades. The admission requirements should be the same and hopefully the free tuition will motivate people to learn, as the possibility of a college education is possible now.
I live in a working class district. Many kids here don't try very hard because they know their parents can't afford college. They slack off, smoke pot, and get below average/average grades because they think their only option is Suffolk Community College. I think her point was that she worked her butt off for her grades and now those kids that are barely trying can go to college alongside her.
I feel like they would have to change their admissions requirements. There will be a huge influx in the amount of applications, there is no way they could accept them all. Standards will have go up.

This has zero chance of passing anyways. Cuomo needs to stick with fixing the decrepit LIRR and MTA system. Or even better a convenient scandal needs to find Cuomo so his ass can get ousted out the same way Mangano and Venditto will go, with DeBlasio hopefully not far behind. I would call kicking those four out of office the "grand slam of politics".
All of this!

Re: Cuomo free college announcement
I am not a fan of this policy. My kids won't qualify and my taxes will go up to pay for it. If they announced this program was inclusive for all NYS students, at least that would be fair.
SUNY schools have gotten super competitive and adding this huge influx of additional students will only make it that much harder to get in.

Yes some schools are harder to get into than others but the state schools have all gotten much more competitive over the years as people have been less able to afford private colleges.

This
I also believe the $125 cap for ALL of NY is way too low. Especially for LI. Some may say if you make $125 or more, paying for your kids college shouldn't be as hard as someone making $80. But it is if you live here and are already taxed to death. Forget it if you own a small business. Cap should go by where you live. It's either help EVERYONE with this or find another way to do it.
My entire neighborhood growing up would have benefited from something like this if they had the chance. I was an honor student all through school, still had zero shot at college. Poor children, even if they have the grades, don't always get the chance. All in all, it's not a bad idea. Only if there are GPA minimums and such.

Re: Cuomo free college announcement
I am totally against this. I would love to see NYS do the "lock in" for state schools like other states do. I think there are other ways to make college more affordable such as interest-free student loans, more work-study programs, etc.

Cuomo free college announcement
I think in theory it sounds great but there are too many what if's and unknown factors that would probably make this impossible to be implemented. I would rather tuition be made more affordable for all as opposed to free for some.

How is he going to pay for this?
Guess
If you think your taxes are high now..just wait..we will be heading towards 50-55% taxation now. Just like in Europe.
Get ready!
You make that sound like a bad thing .
My husband and I are in the highest tax bracket in Germany. We pay that tax rate. We don't mind so much. Sure we'd love to have that money, but we get so much for what we pay for.
That being said, it seems the way the spending is executed is a complete mess. After spending two weeks here, the infrastructure sucks and the subways and trains are kind of crappy.
I do think there should be a GPA limit, though.

Re: Cuomo free college announcement
I too am very liberal but I also don't think everyone should go to college. Everyone needs some kind of post-HS training but not necessarily a 4 year degree- if this goes through (and I doubt it will) we may end up with people who are underemployed because of too many qualified people. And admission standards would have to go up.
Also, I wish they would have looked at differences in COL across the state- $125k in Watertown is going to go way further than the same amount on LI.
But if it did motivate kids in HS to work harder, that would not be a bad thing.

I will GLADLY pay more in taxes to send kids to school for free.
Givuing them a college education with no debt will make this state great. Give kids purpose. Mean more jobs.
Its a win win.
Invest in these kids for 4 more years beyond free high school.

If kids knew that they would have the opportunity to go to college despite their parents not being able to afford it, maybe they would TRY??! Like your daughter, who I'm guessing knew that she would be able to go to college? Why try if you know it's never going to happen?
Some of those kids are no doubt smart but they just have no hope. I can't believe you don't see that.
And the ones that are genuinely just not that smart or not that motivated aren't going to get into that college in the first place! This is not going to change admission requirements!!!
I think it is a fantastic idea! I do agree with increasing the income limit, especially on Long Island. 125k is not the same here as it is upstate.
And I agree with a minimum GPA the student will have to maintain. However, the colleges do have their own standards right now. You can't fail every class and still get a degree.
ETA: I also agree that there should be more accessible trade programs for students who are not college bound. We still need tradespeople, manual and skilled laborers etc., and we should provide those students a path to those vital careers as well.

I would imagine that it works the same way as the access VR program works for students with disabilities. They can go to a state college for free, as long as they keep their grades up and are under a certain income level. If their grades drop, they no longer get the state funding for the school.

I'm surprised by the comments as this was a cornerstone of Bernie's campaign and I do not remember any objections to it then. Hillary is even giving it praise.
Bernie supporters were blinded by ignorance to even see this. I wouldn't want to fund this with my tax dollars. Bernie also wanted to remove the Social Security income cap, so anybody making over 115k would be taxed an additional 6-7%. Bernie was going to tax the living shit out of everbody. Thank god he didn't get elected.
This has zero chance of passing anyways. Cuomo needs to stick with fixing the decrepit LIRR and MTA system. It is a tragedy that Bernie Sanders was not elected. I am a Sanders supporter, and not ignorant. I believe we should increase tax on the top 1%, and I also am willing to pay increased taxes to see all of our children be able to attend college. I will gladly pay.

Re: Cuomo free college announcement
I like the intent of the plan. However, I have trouble with the $125K part. That income is much different for a family on Long Island than it is for many other parts of the state, for example.
That income is wealthy in some parts of the state; I would say that on Long Island, it still falls into middle class. I think the middle class range is HUGE here, so please do not misinterpret my words; I am not saying you must make $125K to qualify for the middle class. I am saying $125K is in the middle-class range.

IMO it's political rhetoric. The tuition plan will require legislative approval, which most likely won't get.

Not what I meant really and I'm not going to argue. If the prospect of free college pushes kids to try harder, I'm all for it. But I meant for the kids that aren't trying and would just be in it for the free ride. And there are some out there, trust me.

Re: Cuomo free college announcement
Personally, I hate the idea. But regardless, any income cap makes it completely unfair. What if you make $150k a year but you have six children? Clearly it will be much harder for you to afford to pay for college for all 6 children compared to someone that makes $120k and only has 1 child. The cost of state schools should be kept as low as possible without having the general public pay for everyone's college education. And frankly many people do not even belong in college. How about provide free training in other areas for those that will not benefit from a 4 year degree?

I don't agree with college tuition for all. Never have. I don't think every student is college bound and unfortunately a system like this will encourage more to apply and go to college where they will do the minimum to get by and get their degree. But they will not do anything with their degree. I have no intention of paying for my child's college education. My mother did not pay for mine. I worked for it. My child will need to do the same if that is the path he chooses . I would rather see him go into a trade. When you pay for your education, you appreciate it more. My degree is in education with a minor in biology. I work as a systems administrator for a retail chain. My degree is only about as much as the paper it is written on. Thankfully 20 years later, my student loans are almost paid off.

I am not totally opposed to the idea, but I do not like the idea of a cap. If I have to pay into it, I would hope that my child could benefit from it. My DH and I work hard and I do not think we should be penalized for it! I assume this would be for tuition ONLY and not room and board so people would still need to pay to go away to college. I also think that students would need to maintain a certain GPA.

This is how I feel too. My parents were probably just at the $125K mark and they had 5 kids and my dad worked 2 jobs and A LOT of OT and my mom worked. My parents could not have survived on less than that, but they were definitely not in a position to pay for college for us.

ITA! Not everyone is meant to go to college, and our society benefits from those who choose paths other than college.
I would love to see more money put into CTE high school programs or expanding TAP, not making an entire college education free.
Sadly, in many cases free decreases the value of things. Free is not always better.
