Curious Question for the Photogs out there.. or anyone else! (long)
Isn't this weird??
I had a professional take pics of Sasha (i posted pics a while ago), and I took advantage of a special she was offering. FREE photo session, you just paid for prints and/or any digital images you wanted after. If you didn't want anything-- then, you paid nothing, etc.
The way you viewed the pics was off her lap top-- she came over and we went through everything. As you know, this is incredibly overwhelming-- so I asked how much a low res disc of the images would be, She told me $50. She made it up- it was kinda obvious she wasn't sure how this model was going to work for her. After her spending a few mins to think about it, she said give me $50 for the disc and a deposit of $50 for the prints you will order. We knew we'd be orderign prints-- either us, our parents, etc. And the price for the prints was pretty inexpensive, so why not get professional as opposed to like shutterfly.
ANYWAY... it turns out she made a mistake and gave us a disk of high res images. I wasn't paying attention and only noticed when she emailed and asked us to check. Fine (score for us, but I still wanted to order prints from her since I thought it was the right thing to do).
I emailed her thanksgiving week with a looooong list of prints that would most certainly exceed the $50 deposit we gave. I hadn't heard back from her, and I emailed her this morning and just got this response:
***sorry it has taken me a while to get back to you but i have a dilemma. i need to know for sure if you have all the images in high res. it seems to me that with the sizes that you mentioned, you do indeed have high res. this would mean that i gave you something that i was actually selling for a lot more than you have paid me. please, understand that i do not want to cause any uncomfortable feelings here. i just need to clarify what i did. if you have the high res files, you can make your own prints and i will not concern myself with the extra money that i would have received. does that seem fair to you? i really don't want this to be a problem for us so please let me know what you think.***
Of course, she made the mistake-- so, she cannot ask us to switch the CDs, and we already copied onto our hard drive as a backup anyway. I am not going to offer more money, because-- frankly, we would have never spent that much to begin with and we shouldn't have to-- but, WHY doesn't she want to make more money when we are ordering an additional $250-$300 in prints???
Isn't that like really weird that she doesn't want to do that? I feel like I am in some weird fight with a friend.
Is the margin that small on the prints that she doesn't want to bother?

I would let it go at that. She needs to have her policies more firmly in place and i think what she is doing is just good business. I would reply-yes after a while I realized that these were high resolution images, but I was still going to order a number of prints from you as agreed upon. Why don't you just order a few prints from her and get the rest printed yourself?

They way she is handling this is pretty unprofessional. When you own a business, it is your responsibility to do things correctly. If you make a mistake like she did, you need to eat it. Depending on what she is charging for a markup, the margin for the cost of prints may be very small. However, I would think with the type of offer she had out her margin on prints would be fairly steep.

I actually think she is being professional. To me she's saying she screwed up and she knows it. She's not sure if you realize how much cheaper you can get prints off of Shutterfly, etc, so she's letting you know because she doesn't want any hard feelings.
Her margin probably is fairly steep. I think you might want to call her and tell her that you're more interested in the quality of the prints and you'd like to go ahead and order through her, no hard feelings.
Before digital, a photographer would've held onto the negatives and therefore the copyright and you'd have to go through him/her to do prints. Digi photogs are essentially doing the same by giving you just a copy of lo res images. So she screwed herself by pretty much giving away her copyright. Since you're a private customer and aren't going to use the images commercially there's not a whole lot she can do about it, so she's just accepted that she made a mistake.

That is really bizarre. I'm guessing if her prints aren't super marked up maybe it's just not worth it to her to print them. I know that most photographers mark their prints up significantly. I pay $40 for an 8x10 and $20 for 5x7 or 4x6.
The whole way she handled it seems really odd though.

Is it possible that you have the only copy of the high res photos? I feel like she might not be able to make the prints because she doesn't have high res files anymore.

Ok-- so while it's weird and she has reasons, etc.
But what I paid her for is $50 for the disk, and $50 as a deposit for prints to be ordered. While I was planning on exceeding that $50, there is still those initial prints which she doesn't want to give me-- and just keep that money cause she gave me the wrong thing. How do I even address that with her?
Eta-- I know it doesn't matter, but I was trying to pay her the same amount of money I would have if she didn't make the mistake... I just find it so weird that she doens't want to make mroe $$$

I would let her know that you want the prints for the $50 deposit you left! It was HER mistake when she gave you the high res disc!

her prints were pretty cheap, like $3 for 4x6, $5 for a 5x7, etc.... I knew it was cheap, which is partly why we were ordering so many.
She clearly did not think her special or her pricing through AT ALL!!!

I would want my 50.00 print credit back. Sorry she made the mistake, I am sure she won't do that again.
But you were charged 100.00 for something you did not want or ask for.
