Curves?

Does anyone belong? What do you think? I like the 3X a week 30 minutes thing but I wonder if it works? Also any idea how much it costs?

TIA!

Re: Curves?

I belong to one. Overall, I have liked it, but I am thinking of joining another gym when my contract is up. In my area (Nassau and Queens) it is $39 a month if you sign up for a one year contract.

Basically, it is a circuit training routine that uses hydraulic resistance machines. Each branch is slightly different - so they may have a different # of machines. You spend 30 seconds on a machine, then move to a small platform called a "recovery station" for 30 seconds, then on to the next machine. On the recovery stations, you walk or jog in place - just move to keep your heart rate up, but you should be working harder on the machines. the workout is 30 minutes, so depending on how many machines the place has, you go around the circuit 2-3 times. You don't have to count reps or anything, there is a recorded voice that tells you to move to the next station after 30 seconds.

The things I like about it is that you can go as hard or as easy as you can, that it is easy for me to fit a 30 minute workout in, and when I am doing the 3x a week, I do notice a difference in strength, and toning. I like the environment - it is all women and not at all intimidating. I think it is a great place for people who have never worked out, or like me, who hadn't for a long time and are trying to get back into it.

The things I don't like about it are the hours - they are open at 8:00 and close about 8PM M-F, but only open from about 7:30 or 8am to 12 noon on the weekends. I never get there on the weekends because of that. This isn't really a big deal to me, but they do not have locker rooms or anything like that. They have a changing area - like a dressing room. It can get a bit boring sometimes, since you are essentially doing the same thing over and over. I am thinking of switching so that I can try other things besides the weight training.

I had great results - combined with WW, I lost 35 pounds and over 24 inches over about a year and a half, but like anything else, you have to keep it up :) I was more relaxed than most people about it too - if I had worked harder, I probably could have lost more. Hope that helps! Chat Icon

Thanks so much for your input. There is one 2 blocks away from my house so it is very convenient. I think $39 a month sounds reasonable and it sounds like the results are terrific. I think I'm gonna do it!

Re: Curves?

I forgot until Ro mentioned it - I did pay a joining fee too, I think it might have been $75. Someone I know just joined a Curves and she said the joining fee was $75 because she signed up for a year, but if she signed up month to month (which is $49/month) then they would have charged her $150 for the joining fee.
