Re: cuts of steak?
It depend on how you plan on cooking it.
For grilling/broiling/pan cooking, we prefer rib-eye or shell steak. Skirt steak grilled and sliced thinly makes great fajitas and a great steak salad over lettuce.
I also pan-sear filet mignon tenderloins which I get from Fairway.
London Broil is another popular cut.
And roast beef can be made with eye round (cheaper) or rib roast (more expensive).
As for marinades, I can't be much help. We don't usually marinade steak, except for Skirt Steak. For that I use a mixture of Worchester sauce, teriyaki sauce, salt, pepper, chopped garlic.
For most steak, I just use salt, pepper, garlic and maybe some Montreal Steak Seasoning.

Re: cuts of steak?
by cut do you mean 'prime' or 'choice' etc or do you mean the part of the cow?
marbling is the factor and it depends on what you want to cook.

Re: cuts of steak?
Skirt is my favorite steak, it is great grilled. Ribeye is also good for grilling or pan frying.

Re: cuts of steak?
good chart of places the meat comes from
http://www.procutlery.com/CutsChart.htm
when buying grade if beef, get prime, choice or select. prime is best and most $$$ choice is second and select 3rd. you can get a nice piece of meat in the choice selection. you want something with nice marbling as that gives it its flavour.
dont go lower than select then you start getting into stuff they use for dog food and taco bell.

Re: cuts of steak?
i know excatly what you mean - dh is good with this stuff but im horrible - i think you just have to learn by trial and error - we usually get skirt steak and marinade it in soy sauce - or a sirloin and we grill it using a mccormick seasoning
