Re: CVS test and Amnio
You don't do an amnio unless you are 35 or older or unless your OB feels that you should have one.

Re: CVS test and Amnio
CVS test?
I took all the tests that were offered to me. I'm neurotic like that though so I need the reassurance.
I know of the tests that I took which were the AFP and the Triple Screen Test? is that what you are referring to? that only involves a prick of the finger for blood and a sonogram to measure the skin folds behind the baby's neck.. those are perfectly safe.

Re: CVS test and Amnio
Agree... you should check with your doctor.
I had one at 13 weeks because my husband and I found out we were cystic fibrosis carriers.
For us - it was the best thing - we wanted to know.
That decision is not for everyone.
If you are at risk for anything, speak to your doctor.
Good luck.

Oh ok i think i get it now...so they do a noninvasive test first for these things and if something comes out of that you have the choice of these two test...Ok thanks :)

Re: CVS test and Amnio
I am over 35 and didn't opt for either the CVS or the Amnio, but it is a personal decision. I had an ultrascreen with good results, so we chose not to do either of these. Generally, I think most people do the CVS or the Amnio, not both and if I were going to choose one, I would have had an amnio because I felt the risks were lower than for an CVS.

Re: CVS test and Amnio
I'm over 35 and also decided not to have either test done, but this is a very personal choice. If we had risk markers for birth defects (other than my age), I may have had an amnio.
The CVS test is done earlier, which is better if terminating the pregnancy is a consideration. I hate to put it that way, but it's true. The CVS screens for Downs, but it won't pick up spina bifida. The amnio picked up spina bifida and a few other disorders that the CVS did not. Also, the CVS carries a slightly higher risk rate than the amnio and may not be as simple to schedule (fewer doctors do them). Both tests carry risks though.
Good luck! This was one of the hardest decisions for us, whether or not to do the anmnio.

Re: CVS test and Amnio
You would only do a CVS test if they predicted that something were wrong very early on (at about 13 weeks). I had one with a previous pregnancy and it was because they found a cystic hygroma.
An Amnio they can do at 16 weeks and it is suggested for woman over 35 or with a history of genetic disorders in their family.
You do not have to get either - they are electives.
Anytime you mess with the fetus or sac there would be a risk of MC.
With DS and this pregnancy I did not get either.

Re: CVS test and Amnio
I am 35 and will be 36 when I deliver and I had an amnio. I do not think they recommend it unless you are 35 or older or you have questionable results from other tests.

Re: CVS test and Amnio
these tests are elective/optional and are usually recommended for women over 35 or someone with other risk factors, but they are not "required"......I had an amnio due to the results of 1st trimester screening. both carry a small risk of miscarriage.

Re: CVS test and Amnio
I had an abdominal CVS at 13 weeks as I am 39 and came back high risk after my nuchal scan. As someone else mentioned these tests are elective. Thankfully everything was fine
