My best friend (male) is gay, and from what I understand:
Gay and lesbian couples usually look for their male or female counterpart. For instance, my best friend is the "feminine male", and he tends to go after and attract more masculine males as his partner.
I'm guessing it goes kinda the same way for a lesbian, but that's just based on what I've noticed. Look at Ellen and Portia, for example.
