D&C questions

I'm having a D&C on Monday and just wondering what to expect. I've been bleeding since this past Monday, but no clots. I've had cramps on and off, some of which have been pretty uncomfortable. I don't know if things will get better or worse at first after the procedure.

When the hospital called with instructions, the nurse said something about someone being with me for the first 24 hours. My doctor didn't mention that and seemed to indicate that I could resume normal activities the next day if I was feeling up to it. To be honest, I'd like to go back to work the next day to keep myself busy as long as I'm feeling up to it. Is that even realistic? How did you feel the next day?

What, if any, testing do they do on the tissue? I was about 7 weeks and it looks like it never developed into a fetus so I wasn't sure if they even did much testing.

How long did it take your cycle to return to normal? Did you ovulate right away? How long did you wait to TTC and how quickly were you successful? If you were successful again, did you go for early blood work or sonos to make sure things were progressing normally?

Any other advice? Thank you for answering my questions. This is all overwhelming.

I never had one but this is what I tell my patients. They need to have an escort, take it easy that day but can resume normal activity the next day.

Generally they only start testing the tissue if its 3 or more MC and you would need to find out if your insurance will cover it otherwise its thousands of dollars.

If you want it tested, your Dr needs to write a script with what tests to run, and the hospital or centers lab and staff need to know in advance so they can preserve the tissue properly.

the next few weeks feels like a period but its not, you can have heavy bleeding no bleeding or anything in-between. You wont get your period about 4-8 weeks. Most Dr don't want pts to try again until they have had a few normal cycles, but you would need to check with your Dr.

DONT eat, drink, chew gum after 12 midnight the night before:)

Good luck and Feel good, so sorry for your lose.

FM if you have more ?

I had a D&C for an 8 week MC this spring, and may need another one for my current MC next week as well.

Physically, it was really ok. I felt pretty fine right afterwards. It is a quick procedure but under general anesthesia, so you need to recover from that for a few hours. You should have someone drive you to and from the hospital.

I think I would have been ok to be left alone in the first day, but emotionally I was very upset and needed my DH there to take care of our children.

We did genetic testing on the fetus and found out the baby had a chromosomal defect which caused the MC.

I bled lightly for just under two weeks, then got my period 30 days after the procedure. Ovulation was unusually delayed for me that first cycle, but did happen. We waited a cycle or two to try again. I did get pg again in five months, which sadly ended in MC two weeks ago. But I did not go for early monitoring.

You may want to cross post this to the TTC and PG after MC board. Though it is usually pretty slow around there, all the ladies there have first hand experience with MC and many with D&Cs.

I am so sorry for your loss and wish you luck with your procedure. Chat Icon

D&C questions

So sorry for your loss. Unfortunately I have had two in the last year. The only reason why you would need someone to stay with you is because of the anesthesia. You can definitely go back to work the next day. Both times I had my D&C my dh and I went out to dinner later that night. You may be a little crampy but that should be the extent of it. First D&C I only bleed a little for a couple of days, second D&C I had no bleeding.

I got my period exactly one month after my D&C (both times). After my first I started with an RE because that was my second loss. We got pregnant three months after my first D&C but that ended up a blighted ovum which is why I needed a second D&C. I currently found out that I'm pregnant again which happened one month after my second D&C. I just found out I have a clotting issue that's why I have had a few losses but hopefully with my new medicine this one will stick!

Re: D&C questions

a few years ago we had seen a heartbeat and then the following week we did not. I was about 7 weeks along. We scheduled the d&c for a few days later. I had it done on a Saturday that way I could rest Sunday and planned on going to work Monday. I had no other children at the time. The procedure was done in the doctors office. It actually went a lot quicker and smoother than I thought it would. I really didn't even bleed much at all afterwards and didn't have any pain. I did end up getting really bad stomach pains for a few days after, causing me to stay home from work, but I'm not sure if it was from the d&c or something I ate.

I got my period 5 weeks later and started TTC right after that period. I got pregnant with my daughter the following month. So it took us 2 cycles to get pregnant after the d&c. My dr told me I could start TTC even right after the d&c, but I wanted to get my period first to make sure everything was back on track. Every doctor will tell you something different though. Some suggest waiting several months to ttc.

We did not have any tissue tested. I'm not sure of how much that would have cost.

I know this is so devastating, and it scarred me for my future pregnancies. I was a nervous nelly with my pregnancies because I was always afraid it would happen again. I hate the first few weeks of being pregnant because I can never relax and enjoy it.

My next 2 pregnancies ( both successful) well with 1 chemical in between, I went for bloodwork the minute I got a positive pregnancy test. I would continue to get beta and progesterone checks every few days to make sure things were in check. Both pregnancies I needed to be on Crinone for low progesterone. So that's why I always got a million sonos early on and went for constant bloodwork. I was a nervous nelly both times.

Best of luck to you! Hang in there Chat Icon Chat Icon

D&C questions

I just had the same thing last month. I had it done at 3pm on a Friday and that night I had cramping and was uncomfortable but for the most part ok physically. Yes you need someone to drive and my DH and I stayed home the next night but by the morning he had work and I was alone and fine. On Sunday I went into the city to see a play and the tree and was walking around all day and fine.
I still have not got a period but it has only been 3 weeks since the procedure. I just saw the doctor last Monday and they told me I could start trying once I get a period.
Overall physically it was not that bad. Emotionally was the harder part. However once it was done I felt I could finally move on.

Re: D&C questions

Thank you for sharing your experiences. It really helps. Chat Icon DH is taking the day off and will be with me at the hospital. I'm hoping everything will go smoothly and it will be an easy recovery at least physically. I'm hoping to be emotionally and physically ready to try again after a cycle or two. Thanks again.
