dachshunds? mine is at the emergency vet hospital right now-UPDATE sort of**UPDATE AGAIN thanks!
i am so heartbrkoken right now...i love my mini D. more than i probably should. anyway, tonight she moved the wrong way and became partially paralyzed (she's only 5yrs old) we brought her there and she has invertebral disc disease and will most likely need an operation. she has to stay there for now and i miss her terribly. the operation in all should cost 6k and i am so anxious over that b/c we have our 1st baby on the way. the thing is: the operation is expensive and we are going to do it but it's not even 100% guaranteed that she will be able to be normal and walk- does ANYONE at all know a dog that has had this done? or has this disease? i know nothing really so any experiences would be very helpful. thank you.
*thanks again for your nice words and sharing your experience-i truly appreciate it. Emma needed the operation and they did it today. just got a call from the surgeon and he said it went well and she looks like she is doing well. obviously there is a lot more to go through but at least we got through that. praying that she has a safe recovery and comes home soon!! i miss her so badly!! i'll update again in a few days.
Update #2 **Again thank you all again. just thought i'd give an update especially if there is ever anyone else out there searching for a post with info, on this. Emma came home yesterday. i was so excited i can't even tell you. but the real healing is really just beginning. the dr. says she is very lucky b/c she is already able to walk again but we have to monitor her very closely! she is on a lot of meds but already looks better today and is walking a lot more steadily. she need strict confinement for 3 mos. at least so it'll be a challenge. we'll do the best we can. for now she is doing well so we hope the good news continues!

Re: dachshunds? mine is at the emergency vet hospital right now
I had a Dachshund way back when I was a child....she was my baby....my parents named her after me and every thing. Needless to say, the same thing happened to her. She loved playing ball and my dad had played with her one night and we don't know if that maybe triggered it....but she had jumped up onto the bed and she ended up paralyzed. My Mom didn't know what happened to her at first....she was dragging her back legs. My elderly neighbor said she looked to be paralyzed. They brought her to the Vet and they clarified it and then they suggested they do the surgery. This is going back to the 80s and then it was expensive. She had the surgery and she never fully regained her strength and didn't recover from it. My parents had to literally squeeze her bladder to allow her to go to the bathroom....she lost control of her urinary function. After a short time, we had to put her to sleep I am so sorry that you are going through with this. Now, figure this is going way back...I'm sure the technology has changed and they are more advanced. I wouldn't take this and think that the same thing will happen to your dog. I am just sharing my story with you. I will be more than happy to share any more information that you may need. My thoughts and prayers go out to you and your doggy. I hope that it is okay Please keep us updated!

Re: dachshunds? mine is at the emergency vet hospital right now-UPDATE sort of
I've had dachshunds for a long time.
I had one that went through surgery in the early 1990s. He did great and was well for a long time. His back acted up again when he was very old, though.
Go to yahoo and find the group called Dodger's List. It is all about dachshund back problems and recovery.

I am so sorry to hear about your puppy!! I am thinking of getting a dachschund and hearing this breaks my heart. How common is this in these types of dogs?

Re: dachshunds? mine is at the emergency vet hospital right now-UPDATE sort of**UPDATE AGAIN thanks!
SIBRIDE: just to answer your question about dachshunds-they are a wonderful breed! this is the best dog i have ever had despite the problem. they are not the easiest to train but it is so worth it once they are not to mention they are the cutest things ever, unfortunately, the disk disease problem can be common for this breed. i had no clue when i got her and for the past few years have allowed her to jump and jump as much as she wants. i was so ignorant about it now i know that if i were to ever get one again i would at least get one from a very very good reputable breeder since it seems that can at least cut down on the chance or the dog having the disease and i would never allow it to jump and hop around like i did. hope that helps.
