daycare moms, opinions on them transitioning when not ready

so I keep hearing how Roman needs to stop drinking from a bottle and how he can't take a nap in the morning because they don't do that in the toddler classroom. I don't see the big deal with letting the kid take a nap instead of forcing him to sit at the table kicking and screaming so he can eat with all of the others because "that's what they do in the toddler classroom" He needs his AM nap and I'm sorry it falls during daycare time. It won't be forever so what is the big deal.Chat Icon Chat Icon

Is he in the toddler classroom yet? If not, I would wait, and once he's transitioned, talk to the teacher. While most toddler classrooms do follow a schedule, the teacher should have some flexibility.

In Alex's class, they all take a nap at the same time, which truly amazes me because before she got into that class, her nap schedule was ALL OVER THE PLACE. I have to admit, I was hesitant at first, but now I love it. Alex, and I think most toddlers, THRIVE on routine. I used to have to battle with her to get her to take her naps, but now that she's in a routine, on the weekend, all I have to do is put her in her crib at the time her teacher usually gives her a nap, and she'll fall right to sleep without hesitation or whining. In fact, now, most days she actually ASKS for her naptime if we run a little over.

But, with that said, our teacher was flexible and still is. In the beginning Alex still needed a cat nap, as did some of the other toddlers. For that reason, they keep a little toddler mattress in the corner of the room. Anytime one of the toddlers is sleepy, they just walk over there, and lay down. Once in a while, Alex still does take a small morning cat nap, and in fact, on days when she wakes up super early, I usually tell the teacher that she should keep an eye out, and encourage Alex to take a cat nap.

We had problems transitioning to the sippy as well. Our teacher was very patient, and took our cues. It took Alex about 3 months in the new class to transition, and really the only reason why she eventually made the transition is because she saw all her other little friends drinking out of a cup.

So, in the end, as frightening as the routine may feel, ultimately it really is helpful and the toddlers usually adapt quite well, and until they do, make sure you have several conversations with your teacher to make sure she is flexible.

He's in an in-between room so to speak. He is the youngest at 15 months. I agree about the routine, he does sit and eat lunch, nap with the others in the afternoon as well as home but still needs his cat nap of like 40 minutes in the AM, so why try to deny him it. He'll drink from a cup and loves to drink from straws but before naps he only wants an actual bottle.

It doesn't sound too drastic to me, I guess the key is to just speak with his teachers about my concerns.
