Do your DC get a lot of ear infections or colds?

Re: Daycare Moms

Knock on wood, no, not really. Of course, the first few months she brought home about 3 colds, and RSV, but she recovered within 2-3 days and since the RSV she hasn't been sick at all...

They get more colds when they're younger (putting toys in their mouths that others touched, etc.)

I've read that ear infections are the most misdiagnosed illness. That often a doctor will see fluid buildup in the ear & prescribe an antibiotic unneccessarily. When my kids get ear infections, I often will rub below their ear to help drain it.

Emma is on her 3rd ear infection. Her dr. told me that if in 2 weeks it doesn't clear up or he just doesn't like the look of it, that we need to go to an ENT.

My situation is this. My sister's, sister-in-law watches Emma 3 days a week. She has 2 boys at home. One is in grade school - the other is 3. The 3 year old constantly has a runny nose - She says it's allergies - I'm not so sure?

We had a horrible incident the first day of Emma's daycare (at a center when she was 8 weeks old) which is why my "sister-in-law" watches her.

I'm just concerned about all of the ear infections....

This is what my DH thinks - that she is taking all of these antibiotics, and she's only 5 months old.

Andrew was constantly sick for about the first 3 months of day care -- ear infections, cold, cough, roseola, fevers. His cough lingered for a while without any other symptoms. Now it's better where he only has the occasional runny nose...

I guess they build up immunity to all the germs?

Re: Daycare Moms

YES! DD has been in daycare for 3 months, and in that time has had 3 ear infections (1 and 1 double), and 2 upper respiratory infections. She's been on antibiotics 2 times.

My ped says that 10 - 12 colds per year is the average for kids in daycare. Not very assuring, i know.

Re: Daycare Moms

My son has been in Daycare since he was 6 weeks old and yes he gets sick a lot. Whenever there's something going around, he gets it! The only time he hasn't gotten something was when hand, foot and mouth disease was going around. Thank goodness!

But, Caiden started getting ear infections when he was around 8 months old. He had one every month, sometimes a double ear infection for 7 straight months, then his doctor decided he needed tubes in his ears.

He also caught RSV from daycare which we ended up spending the night in the hospital when he was 10 months old and had to use a nebulizer for months afterwards whenever he got sick because he would end up having breathing issues.

He also gets colds and fevers all the time and sometimes a stomach bug. And of course when Caiden gets sick, so does mommy! Chat Icon

It's definitely not true when they say babies who are breastfed rarely get sick because I BF Caiden for a year and he's always sick!!!

Re: Daycare Moms

My daughter has been in daycare for six weeks and she has gotten coxsackie, two ear infections a cold and now pink eye.

I hate daycare. I saw one of the kids in her class last week with red/pink eyes and I said something. They told me it was allergies!! Yeah right. Low and behold four days later and Abby has pink eye too. Unfortunately unless you can stay home there is nothing you can do about it. I am hoping that she builds her immunity up fast.

My ped said the same thing and Bella also has had three ear infections with relaitvely high fevers since starting in mid-January. She has been on antibiotics all three times and they have worked wonderfully...my ped also said it's good for building their immunity and theere was nothing we could do to prevent itChat Icon

I can see the ear infections and colds, but the coxsackie and pink eye would concern me because that is a sanitary thing that is preventable...you should speak with someone there...

regarding the pink eye, I had thought the same thing -- but my ped actually said that it can actually result from wiping your nose & then your eye. I guess its the same virus (or bacteria?).

Not that it makes it any less 'catchy' - I always laugh because before entering the infant room where my DD is, you have to put booties over your shoes .... t hen you walk in, and there are boogies & drool coming out of the noses & mouths of every kid, and they are all licking the same toys. One thing you can do to help boost immunity after antibiotics is to give acidpholus (sp?). Joseph was on multiple antibiotics month after month. My wholistic sister suggested giving him the acidophlus. It helped tremendously. Just be aware that it also causes them to have looser stools.

Can infants take it? Is it something that can be found in health food stores?

Re: Daycare Moms

They say that if your child is in daycare, they will get sick alot in the beginning (both my kids were) and then it slows down. If your child does not go to daycare, when they do enter school, they will not be immune to sickness as much as they daycare children. Those children will seem to be sick more in kindergarten.

I just posted about this the other day.

My DS is constantly sick and honestly I do not know what to do anymore. I am always at the PED and he only goes to daycare 3 days a week.
He is always congested (nose & chest) and has had 10 plus ear infections.

We had tubes put in a week ago and already he has another "infection".

Connor has had 4 since Sept. A constant runny nose and several fevers. Everone claims he will be much more immune when he goes to school.

I agree 100%...the ENT we used just reminded me of this last week when the PED. told me my DS had another infection.

I feel terrible because now I know I have given him antibiotics when they were not necessary.

I give him acidodolphis (sp?) when he is on the antibiotics and for a few days later...do you know how long I should give it to him??

Can I ask? - How old is your son? Tubes were mentioned to me - my first thought was she's only 5 months old.

He is 15 months...he had them put in at the end of 14 months.

We saw a great ENT who was not so eager to put the tubes in at first...we worked with him for a few months before.

I know how you feel. You could make an appt. with an ENT, this way they will watch your baby and have a history.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks so much! - I think I may do that.
