Well, before you make a choice, I would find out how much it would cost. If she is looking to watch A baby and not just YOUR baby, it may not be cheaper than daycare at all.

But after you find that out, and if it is similar, I would then weigh the pros and cons for your familyChat Icon

can you do both? I dont know if your daycare will do that or not (mine does).
My SIL watched my DS 2 days a week from when he was 5 months old and then when he was 10 months I put him in daycare one day a week (so three days altogether-I only work part time). He is 26 months now and starting this month I put him in Daycare 2 days and my SIL watches him one day as I am slowly transitioning for when January come and he goes into daycare 3 days a week (my SIL is now going to be watching my new babyChat Icon when he/she arrives) . I love that he has had the best of both worlds. My SIL rocks and he loves her, she is a saint, and having that one on one time b/t them esp when he was an infant was great...but I also really like daycare for him. DS is so social and talkative and has grown so much from both I believe. In fact he asks for my SIL and his daycare teacher everyday.
You need to sit down and see what it's impt to you and your DH... I think when they are infants its nice to be with just a caregiver but as they get older they really get so much from a daycare settingChat Icon

Re: daycare or SIL, what would you do ?

At the age your DC would be, I would go with SIL. Once your DC hits 12-18 months, then I would reconsider daycare.

ETA: As long as you trust SIL and know your DC would be in good hands, and you're not considering her b/c if you didn't family would get upset.

ITA with this. At a young age I would have much preferred to have DD with family. As long as she won't have a ton of kids and you believe your DC will get the proper attention.

At such young age, to me, this is a no brainer...go with your SIL! I feel so fortunate to have had my mom and SIL watch my son for the first two years of his life...it was GREAT for all of us. He is starting daycare/preschool next month.

I would go with SIL and think about daycare when he is 12 months.

My mom has been keeping DS for rme since I went back to work, but he will be going to daycare in January (ds will be 13months) at least PT, if not FT. I beleive he needs to be around and socialize with kids his age.

SIL. I would feel much more comfortable having family watch my DC then strangers in a daycare center but that's just me.

That's what most people I spoke to say. starts with SIL and go with daycare down the road. and no not considering her bc of family, she really is great.

I would do this too. SIL for the first year and then re-evaulate next year. Also, I would consider how many kids she is looking to take on. If SIL is going to have 5 babies in her home, that would concern me - that's a lot for one person vs. a center.

She is looking to take just one child. So it will just be her DC and another baby.

So 3 total with her own? That I would be comfortable with. Sounds win-win to me!

I had DD with family from 12 weeks to 10 months, then a fellow poster watched her from 10 months to 21 months, then she went to daycare (2 weeks ago). As sad as I was to lose the babysitting and send her to daycare, it truly was the best thing for her. At age 18 months the daycare rates decrease a small amount as well.

Its what you feel comfortable with. At the end of the day, it's what give you peace of mind. I personally would try SIL, and if it doesn't work out, then daycare.

Re: daycare or SIL, what would you do ?

You have to weigh the pros and cons and decide what you are most comfortable with - I know I'm in the minority, but I'd choose daycare.

I feel that with family, you have to compromise way too much (or at least, *I* would) It's MUCH more difficult to be direct with family when something bothers you or you feel something isn't 'right' than it is to say it to someone you hire for the sole purpose of caring for your child (as in, someone you wouldnt' otherwise deal with) With family, you have to bite your tounge A LOT ......I wouldn't want to have to do that ......

and I look at Sean going to daycare as just starting school really really early .......not 'some stranger raising my baby' (as countless people have said to me)

My SIL is currently an out of work teach and has dropped the hint several times of us paying her 1/2 of what we'd pay daycare to watch Sean ......I don't want it.

Re: daycare or SIL, what would you do ?

Definitely your SIL. At that age (newborn) I much rather have my DC with an at home sitter than at a daycare. You can reevaluate once your DC gets older. Also $ wise you can save the extra $ you would be spending on a daycare center for DCs college fund.
