is a christening close? If so, they may be getting him a savings bond, and want to put his soc. sec. number on it.

No. My mom and MIL asked for Nate's. My mom is getting him some savings bonds and opened a savings account in his name so she can save money for him. My MIL opened a 503B (not sure name, but college saving fund) and she made him the benificiary of some of her assets.

Its quite common.

I think a bond too. But anyone can buy a bond and use their own SS #, it doesnt matter. When your son cashes them in, they will use his SS#. My Mom kept wanting to give my kids' SS# out to family & friends when they wanted to purchase bonds but I nixed it. I dont want their SS#s floating around too much. I would be sure they are not giving it out. My Mom didnt realize that you didnt need the baby's SS# to do a bond.Kids can have their SS#s stolen, probably moreso b/c whose going to do a credit check on their infant?? Not that the people you know are doing anything weird with it but the more people who have it, the more chances of other eyes seeing it. Someone in an office, a piece of paper thrown out but not shredded....Guard the SS#

My MIL called for Jared's social too...I was like..."What do you want it for?"
I found out later that it was for a bond...

Yeah, I never ask anyone for the babies social, it seems to be an older generation thing. I usually use my own SS# to buy bonds.
But I also wouldn't be worried about my MIL or another family member having my sons #.
