DD wearing bikini - question?

Is it really that big of a deal?

I let my twins wear bikinis because, well, frankly, it's easier to change a stink bomb of a diaper than a one piece. They aren't skimpy and really, they aren't revealing anything. So what is the big deal?

eta - not trying to get flamed, and call me naive if you must. But as a relatively new mom to girls, I am curious to hear the reasons of why bikini wearing 12 month olds is an issue.

DD wearing bikini - question?

I would totally put DD in a bikini. I don't see an issue at all personally. We have a tankini and a few one pieces, but other people bought them for us - I would definitely buy a bikini if I was buying it myself.

Re: DD wearing bikini - question?

I put DD in a two piece with a rash guard on top just because I want as much of her skin protected from the sun as possible. I don't have an issue with a bikini on a baby otherwise.

This
I dont have a DD, but I always have DS in a rash guard bc I want to limit his exposure to the sun as much as I can
That being said I dont have an issue with a bikini on a baby either!

Re: DD wearing bikini - question?

I don't see any problem with a young girl in a bikini. A tasteful bikini. That is the difference I think. If everything is covered up properly, it looks cute. A g-string bikini or triangle top bikini, uh, no.

Re: DD wearing bikini - question?

There are a few reasons I'm not a fan of bikinis on little ones:

1) There's just not enough skin protection. You're exposing way too much of their skin to the sun.

2) In general, I see bikinis as "sexy" and don't think little girls should be sexualized in any way.

As for the ease of changing diapers, you can easily get a 2-piece bathing suit (tankini) that doesn't expose your daughter in the same way.

DD has a tankini and 2-piece with rash guard top. I love the ease of changing, but not a fan of babies in bikinis.

I don't have a problem with bikinis on little girls. DD has a few, but i like to limit her exposure from the sun as much as possible. She wears these sets from costco most of the time. Like bikinis, it has a separare bottom so its easy to change diapers. Plus it comes with the cute hat... all 3 pieces are sold as a set for under $20 too.

Re: DD wearing bikini - question?

I actually think it's adorable on kids that age.
I would totally put my DD in one- but I figure it would mean even more sunscreen to slather on.
So I opt for one piece just because it's more coverae/less sunscreen to worry about.

BUT- I do NOT think they are sexual at that age.
#1- toddler bikinis are not string bikinis- they are usually some cute little ruffly thing.
#2- I don't think they start looking "sexual" until the child is closer to puberty.
Like an 11 year old in a bikini- yeah I can see that maybe going both ways.
But not a 2, 3, 4 year old etc

ITA. Sun protection is the main factor for me. DD is 6 now and has always worn and still wears a 2 piece bathing suit, where the top is a rash guard, like Julz posted above.

This. Em has tankinis and rash guard 2 pieces. She also has some 1 pieces as well. I don't like bikinis on kids, and my DH would have a cow! My mom bough DD a really cute bikini for Great Wolf and DH said not a chance. We returned it for a cute Dora outfit instead.

I don't think there is anything wrong with bikinis...however like others say the sun exposure is an issue.

DD has alot of tankinis....still easy to change diapers but still cute. I just got a few at childrens place.

DD wearing bikini - question?

If I had a DD she would be rockign a bikini and lathered up in sunscreen.

There is nothing sexual about anyone in a bikini unlees someone makes it sexual.

Ditto. I don't have a girl, but if I did, I'd opt for a 2 piece with a rashguard or a tankini.

Is it really that big of a deal? Of course not. Me personally - I wouldn't put DD in a bikini. I am not comfortable with it.

Re: DD wearing bikini - question?

I have 2 DDs and never thought of bikinis as sexual....BUT I opt for the bottom & a rash guard top for the ease of changing & better skin protection.

DD wearing bikini - question?

I rather not as much skin show on my DD cause of the sun and My DH would never allow me to put one on her...he feels his little girl should be covered up and i respect that.

Re: DD wearing bikini - question?

I won't put DD in a bikini just bc of the sun exposure. I agree that it is sooo much easier to change a diaper with a 2 piece on, so DD wears a swim diaper like this

swim diaper

with a long sleeved rash guard.

I don't have a DD but if I did, she would probably wear one as long as there is some sun protection :) That and lather her up in sunscreen.
I agree, it's not sexual on a baby.

. Same here. I'm just worried about sun exposure. I have no problem with kids in bikinis

Re: DD wearing bikini - question?

At our village pool I would say 90% of the young girls are in bikinis or tankinis. We see very few one pieces. I think there are bikinis and there are binkinis. There are many that are very ruffly and little girl like. While I have seen some string ones in the store I only see a select few older girls (think 12+) in those. I would never consider the string ones. Those are not appropriate for young girls but I have no problem with a cute age appropriate one. It is so much easier for my 5 and 3 yr olds to go to the bathroom in. I prefer the tankinis but there were a few cute 2 pieces at gymboree and lilly pulitzer that were not riskee.

At first I thought I wouldn't let DD wear a bikini...and I returned a skimpy one she got as a gift...but kept a really cute one. Then we went to beach & I realized how big a PiA it wld be to change her in a one piece...now I'm a fan of the 2 piece as long as its not super skimpy! Lol.

DD wearing bikini - question?

I don't have a problem if anyone else wants to let their dd wear a bikini. I don't judge people for something silly like that. I just would prefer my daughter NOT wear one. So she wears Rash Gurad tops with a regular bottom

Re: DD wearing bikini - question?

DD has a tankini and a two piece from Carters where the top is a rash guard. We're using the tankini for indoor pools and her swim class. I slather her with sunscreen anyway when we're out.
