Dear People standing at the door to the grocery store,

No, I will not donate to your dance class, wrestling team, or youth center.

I also will not give $5.00 for a 50 cent candy bar because the money is going to "drug free teenagers".

Oh, and the man who keeps walking through parking lots and talking about kidnapped children, soliciting donations, please be advised that I will not be donating to you either...you scare me the most!

Signed,

Just let me get to my car with my groceries, I already spent enough money!Chat Icon Chat Icon

I never sold my girl scout cookies that way either, just to friends, family, coworkers of my parents and neighbors..that's it.

The problem is they are up in your face. Today I had 4 little girls fighting each other to try to get my attention and jumping in front of my cart to donate to Breast cancer fund...Its a nice thought but I dont carry cash and I dont want to have to explain myself either.

I dont think standing outside a grocery store is the way to do a call for donations etc.

The VA guys at King Kullen are so old that cant hear and sit so close to the front door you have to SQUEEZE past them....It bothers me that they are kinda being RUDE while asking for my money.

Re: Dear People standing at the door to the grocery store,

What gets me is that I am CONVINCED that one group of teenage boys who claim to be selling for their basketball teams just pocket the funds...They are always standing there with a bag full of your average sized M&Ms, selling them for 6x as much as they are being sold for inside...

Re: Dear People standing at the door to the grocery store,

The kids are not standing out there selling anything, they are standing there with a metal can to take donations for their school athletic teams....

I am more annoyed when you go out of your way to avoid them, and they still call out to you. Or, the kids are inside the grocery store, or in the bathrooms, and its the parents soliciting money.

I feel the SAME WAY about the "drug free teens" fund. There is no sign, there is nothing on the hersheys bars that indicate its for a drug free teens fund, and the people do not even have clothes on that reflect this :"fund". They sell Hersheys bars for $5.00.

Re: Dear People standing at the door to the grocery store,

As someone who used to sell Girl Scout cookies outside supermarkets and collect food for the homeless, I guess I see their side. I also worked for 2 days for the Missing Children's Help Fund, collecting donations for kidnapped children. It wasn't a job for me, but there are many who make their living that way.

A simple no thank is all that is needed, especially when you are talking about children.

I agree 100% but then again, a child should also understand, or explained to before the start asking for money/donations outside of stores, etc what "no thank you" means!

Re: Dear People standing at the door to the grocery store,

I hear you, but I have also been one with a can before too. I have helped my dad's organization raise thousands for Juvenile Diabetes outside of Walmart. I never got in anyone's face, if they did not want to donate, they just ignored me. Usually they donated though. Even if it was just a dollar or some pocket change, it was wonderful. I have to say it's hard to keep track of every person going in and out when you have been there for hours. Don't get too upset, it's actually pretty cool that with the current state of the world, there are still people out there who want to help those who are less fortunate. I also feel that with how many kids are today, teaching them the value of volunteering for a good cause to help others should be reinforced. I do think that kids should be supervised when doing this type of thing and the adults should ensure they aren't harassing anyone.

i agree- i just gave 5.00 yesterday to the people volunteering for mentally retarded adults. and if i don't have cash (or don't want to donate), I just smile and say "I'm sorry, I can't"- they're there for a reason, and most are volunteering for very good causes.

This is when I get bothered...when I'm asked twice, especially since I'm a sucker and always cave and donate. There have been times when I've donated on my way in and then I've been asked again on my way out Chat Icon

What? Condescending? That was not my intent at all, and I was not arguing with you, I just thikl once you have kids you see things through different eyes. It's just like I use to walk past the teen drug awareness fundraisers and not give $, now that someone in my family has been PERSONALLY affected, it gets my attention, I have a personal interest in it because I can "relate" to it. You'll see, anything that has to do with children takes on a different meaning once yor a Mom, but I agree kids shoudl be curteous, I just think they are so goal-oriented and excited that they get ahead of themselves. That's allChat Icon

DH and I always donate to them- for one thing, it's an established organization, and they just sit at a table outside Stop and Shop. They don't verbally solicit. I have no problems with the presence of people who do this kind of work, but don't appreciate being asked, especially more than once. One night at Target a kid asked me to buy candy, I said no thanks, and he followed me to my car. It was dark, and it scared me a little.

I don't think people should have to justify the choices they make with THEIR money when it comes to donations.
