Dear Truck Driver on the JRP this morning...
You made a VERY bad choice when you got on the Jackie Robinson Parkway this morning and decided to forgo the "NO COMMERCIAL VEHICLES" warning on the entrance ramp. Instead, you thought "Hey, I'll make it and NOBODY will catch me.
WRONG
You did NOT make it. Instead, you got the top of your rig sliced open like a can of sardines endangering the lives of your fellow commuters and potentially killing someone in the car next to you. I hope and pray to G-d there were no injuries as I haven't had a chance to watch or listen to news reports today since I was over an hour late to work because of your lack of decision making skills. Yeah, I saw the damage. It was horrendous I also sat in an hour of traffic all the way back on Union Turnpike.
You are a menace. You are irresponsible and you should have your drivers license stripped from your possession.
SHAME ON YOU!
You don't get my usual "Kisses" salutation. You get smacked with my proverbial wet noodle.

Re: Dear Truck Driver on the JRP this morning...
This happened a few weeks ago on the Northern State Parkway as well. I was coming back from Manhasset (heading east) and sat in traffic for over an hour because of a tractor trailer ON THE WESTBOUND SIDE.. Everyone had to stop and look! OMGosh I was FUMING!!!!!!!
Next time (hopefully there won't ever be a next time), Can I borrow the wet noodle?? I wanted to smack the driver and ALL the drivers on the east side who HAD to stop and Look!

God I can't stand this! I don't get what part of NO TRUCKS they don't understand. Why do they think they will be the one who MIRACULOUSLY clears all the overpasses that weren't designed to accomodate their huge azz trucks?

Re: Dear Truck Driver on the JRP this morning...
I have theories.
1) Drivers aren't paying attention to signs.
2) Routes aren't planned in advance.
3) Truck drivers are using GPS systems meant for passenger cars and NOT commercial vehicles.
4) The drivers don't KNOW what it means to be a commercial vehicle - the criteria or perhaps they don't speak English.
It happens. Someone needs to be accountable. The owner of the vehicle and the driver. It was frightening as well as inconvenient.

I think its all of the above unfortunately. Perhaps the signs should be more explicit that trucks will not fit. I wonder if people just think its a 'we don't want commercial vehicles on the road' law, as opposed to 'your truck will not fit under our bridges' law.. and therefore tend to see if they can get away with it. Before i moved to LI, i had no idea why trucks weren't allowed on certain roads. In Boston i'd never seen anything like that (then again, im not a truck driver)

Re: Dear Truck Driver on the JRP this morning...
Actually - the problem is that NY is the ONLY state that has these issues because it's the only state that has those low bridges. Most of them are in the five boroughs and it relates back to Robert Moses building the bridges extra low so trucks and buses couldn't use the parkways. But, if you travel in other states you will see that parkways have trucks and buses on them and no low bridges. What generally happens is that these truck drivers are from out of state, don't know the area, see the signs too late (they are usually small white signs as you get on the parkways) and can't get off the parkways in time.
I would imagine the truck driver didn't want the top of his truck sliced off, nor did he want to spend hours on the parkway instead of getting to his destination. I don't think any of these guys get on the parkways on purpose....it's just a weird thing in this particular area that other's don't know about.

Oh I'm sure you are right regarding not doing it on purpose. But isn't there some responsibility on the part of the driver and perhaps their dispatchers? They knowingly travel through NYC which has restricted roadways to those vehicles. If NY is the only state with that issue, then its not much to know or remember if its on your route.
Perhaps a solution would be a bigger sign with a picture of a truck with a red circle and line going through it or an "x". It would certainly make more of an impact on commercial drivers.

Or a low overpass BEFORE they get onto the parkway. The only place that I know of that gives the drivers an escape route is when the LIE merges with the Northern State...and I'm pretty sure it's drivers unfamiliar with this area that have this problem...Drivers/Dispatchers familiar with the area know to stay off the parkways...

I took out a Denny's sign in Conway, AR driving our U-Haul cross country. Sometimes it's just an accident.
I think these drivers get into big trouble when this happens.

In regard to the signs, there are some that are mounted higher so that they can be read from a tractor trailer's cab. Unfortunately, they sometimes still don't notice and they end up on the parkways anyway. I know this is aggravating.

You're right - New York is the only place with this issue. However, professional truck drivers should know to stay off the parkways. All companies that have ever lost a truck this way should warn new drivers about the danger when they send them to this area.
Seriously, the low bridge issue on the parkways is a 40 year old situation - there is no reason to have a wayward truck.

That was sort of my original point. This was a HUGE rig and not a truck like a U-Haul rental. People don't usually rent trucks this big. This was a truck that was (or at least should have been) driven by a professional. When a person's livelihood is truck driving, it makes sense to know the roads and restrictions. It would be the same as me trying to teach in another state. I wouldn't assume the curriculum to be the same in NJ as it would be in NY. I'd have to follow their state curriculum/regulations. Not everything is transferable.
