Deck on top of garage roof?

I noticed a bunch of houses with decks on top of their flat garage roofs...just cute little fenced in ones with some chairs to hang out on..I love this idea..
the house we bid on has the door to the roof area alread there..but nothing on the roof..does anyone know what you do to the roof? Add wood floor and railing? Ballpark prices would be great!

Our house has this as well - the door from one bedroom leads out to the garage roof. Our Engineer told us that these garage roofs should NEVER be used as a deck as that is not what they are intended for and are not built in the proper way. You could come crashing through.

That said, when we plan to dormer the house, we're going to pitch that roof or go right over it so that water doesn't pool on top.

oh really I really loved the look..what about for show?? thinking just putting chairs would be bad???

When we did the doormer on my home , I wanted to do this too. I was told that you need to reinforced the roof, ie. as if you were to dooremr above a garage.. Its a great idea I love it too. Although I ended up building a 2nd floor privacy deck instead , in case i wanted to doormer above the garage

I think it was just a way of making the flat roof look a bit nicer? Rather than having a pitched roof on the house and then a flat garage....the fencing looks nicer and breaks it up.

I see a lot of those old doors transformed into windows too - now I know why
