Deck, Patio? what would you do?
right now all we have in the yard off the sliding glass door is a builder step. I am going to start looking for estimates for a deck/patio..
what would you put on?
what i really want it something that comes right off the back with no steps down, and then from there like 3 steps down with another sitting area...if that makes sense
what would you recommend and do you have a contractor you would use? pictures would be helpful!

What if you did a deck right off the house, then have it step down to a patio area where you can have seating?

I like patios better.
If you hade the money, I would do a patio right off the back and then steps down for the conversation area you want.

this might be a dumb question but can you do a patio off the back with no steps down? like something that comes right off the door?

We did a deck because that is what Danielle wanted, but I would of preferred a Brick paver patio - No maintenance at all

Re: Deck, Patio? what would you do?
The first "related thread" below is mine from last year, because I had the same question you did.
In the end, we chose a patio that had a top landing level with the back door, and a three sided stoop for convenience:
Do you not like the step down for safety, more about convenience? I was wary too, but it's actually pretty comfortable going up and down. And my nieces and nephews use them to sit on when they come over.

I would do a patio like the photos above.
I don't like low decks because I worry about animals getting under there and making homes.

WOW
That looks great. The reason I didnt want steps down was more for convenience like when you are carrying a tray of food out it just seems easier but it doesnt seem possible to do a patio that come straight out

Re: Deck, Patio? what would you do?
well if you really want something that comes right off the house you would have to do a deck. You might want to consider composite decking like Trex or something similar to that. No maintenance it's plastic. Then step it down to a patio area. Love the pic that Jenn627 posted. Gorgeous find Jenn.

Re: Deck, Patio? what would you do?
I don't have pictures of it but my parents did a trex-type deck a couple of years back that looks something like this:
They have a small house so the deck is small also, and they like it, but one thing they complained about is the staining from food dropped on it. Notably, my nephew dropping potato chips and then stepping on it! Oops. Whoever else has a deck like this can chime in on how to get rid of oil stains, but I don't think my parents have tried yet.

That is what my house looks like. I'd do a trex deck if we had the money.

Re: Deck, Patio? what would you do?
I would check with your town, but I believe that a deck will raise your taxes b/c it attaches to the house, but a patio will not.

Re: Deck, Patio? what would you do?
These pics are from our inspection over 3 years ago(taken in January) , but the deck is off the kitchen and we have steps on both sides of the deck but one side leads down to an area with pavers.
