Decks
So DH and i were discussing whether we should do pavers or put in a deck on the side of our house. We don't have a backyard so our side yard is the backyard.
We have to do something.
Which cost more? Pavers, decks..something else possibly?
is their maintenance on a deck? Do I need a CO?

Re: Decks
I'm not sure of what would cost more a deck or pavers, would probably depend on the size and wood you would choose for the deck. But I know you do need a CO for the deck.

Re: Decks
There is maintenance on a wood deck. Every year or so you need to power wash it and stain it. I know, I have to do mine.
If you do Trek Decking, then you never have to do anything to it and of course it costs a lot more.
Brick pavers are very nice too. We have the brick walkway and also around our flower beds. I wanted to do the brick pavers but Danielle wanted the deck. In the end she won...Hey maybe she should power wash it and stain it lol.
Anyway the price of the deck or of the pavers will be based on overall size you are looking for, and what type of materials you use.
We did a Treated wood deck, and we got a 16X33 for size. We paid $4950.

Re: Decks
I just had both an estimate for pavers and a deck, and the pavers were cheaper. I have a number for a very nice guy who did my pavers for my driveway that is very reasonable. He was the subcontractor for the paving company but I have his direct information. If you want it let me know.

Re: Decks
The paving estimate for the front stoop, flower beds, side stoop with a 20/20 patio was $12K. I've gotten 4 paving quotes and that was the lowest.
I haven't gotten any deck quotes yet. If I did the front stoop and flower beds, I think I would end up paying about 4-5k for the pavers. I was hoping to pay about $4k for the deck.
Even treated wood needs to be powerwashed and stained every year?

We just powerwashed and stained our deck, but the stain we used (which is a stain/water repellent in one) says to do it once every three years....so I'm not sure....

Re: Decks
We redid our deck to make it bigger and the entire thing cost about 5K for just the wood. We used the timbertech (composite) and it looks awsome.. Doesnt splinter get too hot and never have to do any maintance... the railings were alot of $ but they look great.. My DH did it all himself so we didnt pay for labor thank god!! Dont have pictures but I can take one if you want.. Its about a 20x20 deck.. A CO well not everyone gets a CO for a deck

Re: Decks
well, another question is how much does each add to home equity.... I suspect a brick or paver patio would add more equity than a deck, since it is more permanent and substantial....
normal treated lumber decks need washing and sealing about every 1-3 years, depending upon the sealer used. You should get one with UV protection if your deck is in the sun.... Also, once and a while it may also need to be sanded prior to sealing.... and that's a major #@$@#$ to do....
On the flip side, you have to worry about possible settling and weeds with a paver, brick, or cement patio.... and patios are more $$, in general.. so each has pros/cons
one thing..... avoid a brick patio with cement between the bricks.... the cement can loosen over the years, and the whole thing will have to be re-pointed.... easily a 2k job for a professional, or if you're a DIY sucker like me, will ruin one week of your summer, and any hope of a manicure

I just talked to a guy I know that is a carpenter. He also advised me that if you use a composite there is no maintenance. Sounds good to me. Our deck would probably be a little smaller. I was also told that the railings are what really drives up the price. Where did you get the wood?

We just power washed our deck and my DH bought the Thomsons clear and I made him return it for one with a stain in it. The clear ones only last 1 year, but a semitransparent stain can last for 3 years. Consumer reports has a good article about it. We have a HUGE deck and there is no way I would want to have to power wash and stain it every year. Too much work!

I dont like the stains that have color. My FIL did his a few years back and it turned out to be orange. I like the clear.....
The composite decking or trek decking is amazing stuff but you also will pay a lot extra for it Scott

we usually get the best price from riverhead building (0ne in brentwood,Northport & riverhead) If they dont have the best price we compare to Kleet lumber in Huntington.. So far Riverhead has always come in the best (we got Alot of stuff form them, windows lumber for other stuff) hey are so great you call to orde the day before and they deliver the next day.. You can go to them and see the colors and raiings too. Yes the railings were a fortune.. So was the gate DH made 90.00 just for the piece of composite... Ill get you a picture..

In my opinion, a deck can be a disadvantage b/c you are higher up, then you therefore have less privacy.
I would opt for a paver patio, that way you arent raised "up" for people to see you. And you can then put some shrubs around to create a screen.
But if this isnt an issue to you, or you have privacy, go for the deck. I do like them...just only in the right places.

and here is another issue...
decks are structures attached to the house, which increase living sq footage and therefore taxes. You must get a permit to put up a deck in Nassau County...
Pavers ARE NOT attached to the house, and therefore, do not increase taxes but do add some value to a home.
That alone would steer me from a deck.
