Declining the Glucose Test?
Anyone refused the glucose test?
Was your OB ok with it?
I really don't want to go through the glucose test again since I've been there and done that. Failed it the first time and had to self prick for awhile - not fun. In the end, my baby was average weight and I just gained abit more than expected, no big deal.
What's the worse that can happen if I decline?

Declining the Glucose Test?
I don't even think it's possible or at the very least they will highly advise against it. GD can be very serious if not maintained by diet or meds and each pregnancy is different. The glucose tests suck and being diagnosed sucks more but it's what we as pregnant women do to make sure our babies are born healthy. IMO I think it's very careless and selfish to not only not take the glucose test and also to not treat GD if diagnosed.
As someone who is terrified of needles, blood, etc. and has been diagnosed at 13 weeks with GD, I get it. It sucks BIG TIME. Finger pricks 4x a day and I have to watch what I eat, which if you knew me, you'd know how difficult that is for me to do. But it's not about ME. It's about my child. Also my failing numbers were borderline and all of my fingerpricks have been within normal range so I think I was either misdiagnosed or I was off the day I took it (was sick) but I say better safe than sorry.
ETA: This baby was born to a mother who had undiagnosed GD

Re: Declining the Glucose Test?
It can be a big deal. And IMO not worth the risk. Yeah it sucks testing your blood but why risk potential complications on your child because of an inconvenience. I can't imagine an OB sanctioning the refusal to take the test, unless you're agreeing to test your blood and follow the diet preemptively.

Declining the Glucose Test?
I'm a little baffled by your post..In my opinion, just because you "don't feel like" taking the glucose test or "pricking" yourself is not a good Enough reason to not take this test. My poor baby was in the NICU getting the bottom of her foot pricked every couple hours because she had low blood sugar due to my GD. And I was extremely strict with my diet and on insulin at night. By you ignoring the fact that you might have GD, my cause your baby a lot of pain and health issues upon birth and quite frankly I think that's selfish. I'd rather prick my finger 20 times a day and take a glucose test every single day then have my little girl suffer. Sorry if I'm coming across as harsh, but I just don't get it.

Re: Declining the Glucose Test?
Absolutely not worth the risk. I doubt your doc will let you out of it. I had repeated reactions and still took them multiple times.
It's not cut and dried like you think. Why chance it or risk your babies health?

Re: Declining the Glucose Test?
While I don't have the balls to refuse, I totally feel where you are coming from. My mom, MIL, step MIL, aunts, etc all had plenty of babies without this test. My DH was 10+ lbs and so was his brother. MIL had natural births. No complications. I really don't get it. I heard that they treat you like you have GD even if you pass the test, if you have a big baby these days. I'm sure in SOME women & babies it can become a health issue, but SO many ppl seem to be diagnosed with GD these days, and I can't help but wonder if some of it is to bill the insurance for more tests and pad the pockets of the test strip and meters companies.
Please don't flame me, this is just my opinion.
I passed my GD test last time, though I literally almost choked on that awful slime they made me drink and I'm dreading it this time around.
ETA: my DD had low blood sugar at birth and spent 3 days in the NICU, and I didn't have GD. I passed my test w/ flying colors...I was induced/ had c section and couldn't eat for over 24 hours, which is why I think DD had the low blood sugar. Dd was 7lbs 1oz.

Declining the Glucose Test?
You would be putting your child at SERIOUS risk if you didn't test for it, and then treat it. Pretty selfish

There is one line in this that answers that question. The rest is just some info to read and consider. It's more than just high birth weight, so much more. I urge you to look into it and speak with your doctor in depth about this.

I think this is a fair question, and I am sorry that others are being kind of rude about it.
I do think it is necessary, however.
Here is a pretty balanced article on the subject.

Re: Declining the Glucose Test?
Sorry IMO if you are pregnant than you have to suckk up all the unpleasant things that come with being pregnant. That includes the glucose test.
I HATED that drink at my one hour. I failed it by 1 point and had to take the 3 hour. I HATED that drink even more.
I was just told this week that I need to schedule my 1 hour for this baby and I cringed at the thought of THAT drink again. I would NEVER not take it because of that or any reason.
Suck it up...sorry.

Ok, but I'm sure there were also many children born 30 years ago who DID have complications, which can now be avoided by taking these tests.
To the OP, think about how you would feel if you opted out and there was a complication with your baby that could have been avoided if you took the test. Wouldn't you wish you could go back and take it?

Re: Declining the Glucose Test?
As someone who had GD twice, no way would I refuse the test. My babies were both born in the 6lb range, not big at all, and had issues with maintaining their blood sugars immediately after birth. DD was in the NICU on a glucose drip. My sugars were always well controlled and I didn't gain any extra weight.
I really wouldn't play games with the health of my children but that's just me.

Re: Declining the Glucose Test?
I wouldn't decline it even though lots of woman previously have lived without this test.
It's better to know what you and your baby will be dealing with now than be left in the dark. You don't want the decision to skip the test be a regret you have to live with.
Just because your DC was born fine even though you failed the test doesn't mean this one will be the same
Better to be safe than sorry.

I think this is a fair question, and I am sorry that others are being kind of rude about it.
I do think it is necessary, however.
Here is a pretty balanced article on the subject.
From the article:
"To this day, researchers still don’t know the answers to a lot of questions about screening for gestational diabetes. This is what I gathered from reading the most up-to-date literature:
We don’t know the best screening test for gestational diabetes. We don’t know the best time during pregnancy to screen for gestational diabetes. We don’t know if you need to fast beforehand. We don’t know if the best cut-off point for the test. We don’t know if screening the entire population results in improved outcomes. (Researchers theorize that screening can improve outcomes such as large birth weight, but nobody has done a randomized, controlled trial to test this theory)"
I hope they continue to research this and come up with a better screening test, since they aren't even sure the way they are doing it is the best way and the 1 hour test is only 76% accurate!!

Declining the Glucose Test?
from a nonjudgmental standpoint, these ladies are concerned for the health of you baby. There are a lot of things you can decline, that I was not aware of when I was pregnant. I don't think I would because I would rather know one way or another. Discuss it with your health care provider and make a decision that's best for you and your baby.

Re: Declining the Glucose Test?
My confusion here is that while the test may be a bit unpleasant (honestly I didn't find it bad at all but everyone has different experiences I guess) it is a lot LESS unpleasant than so many other aspects of pregnancy- the utmost being labor and delivery. So if you can't drink a sugary drink and have some blood drawn, if you just CANNOT stomach such a thing, how are you planning to push out a baby, tear your who-ha all to shreds, have a needle placed in your spine for an epidural, or possibly have your abdominal muscles cut open and your organs moved aside for a C-section? I guess I am not seeing how a glucose test is really that bad in the scheme of horrors you endure to have a baby. But maybe that's just me.

Re: Declining the Glucose Test?
For this pregnsncy alone, I endured 10 weeks of injecting a long 18 gauge needle in my ass muscle filled with oil that ultimately caused me to get gigantic uncomfortable welts and bruises for weeks.
For my entire pregnancy I used a daily injectable blood thinner right in my stomach that burned like a mofo each time and left my belly so bruised it was multicolored.
Right now I have miserable cold with a throat the feels like it was scraped against a cement floor. I would love for nothing more than to take a long glorious nap- but I can't because my baby's needs come first.
Consider that glucose test a crash course in the rest of your life. Good luck!

Re: Declining the Glucose Test?
As someone who was diagnosed GD at 12 weeks and has been sticking myself 4+ times a day since only to have normal readings I am so thankful and relieved every time I go to the doctor and my baby is in the 55th percentile for size or her heart echo came back completely normal and i know that I am doing the right thing for her. Am I perfect with what I eat heck NO...but i keep it reigned in and monitored. Why would you not want to make sure that this very serious issue is under control and being watched. Inconveniece is a lame and lazy excuse for anything with prenatal care and you should have been thought about a long time ago. Its not about you anymore and your body is not yours anymore...Just sayin!

Re: Declining the Glucose Test?
I don't know of any OB's that are OK with it. Anyone I know who hasn't taken the test is automatically treated as if they have GD.
I'm no expert, but there are risks to the baby if do have GD. You're reasons IMO are not good enough to decline the test.
