Decorating A Bathroom

Here is my situation.
We have two bathrooms.
The "main" and the master.
Both are located upstairs (we have a mother daughter. Original bathroom is the "apt" side, downstairs)..

All of our company uses the main bathroom which we are completley re doing.

How should I decorate?
Would it be wierd to do a "Kid theme" since this really is DS' (and any other future kids) bathroom (DH and I use the master bath) or knowing that it's the main, would you decorate it for adults?

I hope this makes sense.
I can't wait to hit BBB and start shopping to decorate.

TIA!!!

Re: Decorating A Bathroom

I'd do a neutral theme with some "kid" stuff thrown in.

I wouldn't do a kiddy shower curtain or bath mat. But a cute toothbrush holder and garbage can I would do.

Re: Decorating A Bathroom

I have something similar coming up in the relatively near future. Our plans are to keep the "permanent" things neutral. Tile, tub, sink, toilet, etc. All of the other things (paint, towels, shower curtain, etc) will be kid-oriented.

DC will be using the bathrooms 100% of the time. Guests will use it 1%-5% of the time..... majority rules... bathroom gets decorated for DC. Chat Icon

Yeah, I agree.

We have a kiddie bathroom but as you know, we also have that 1/2 bath off of the den for company.

With your set up, I'd pick a neutral color, a children's toothbrush holder, tissue box... just a couple of things, and then get a coordinating colored, plain bathmat, towels, window treatments.

Believe it or not most of the kid bathroom stuff is not gender neutral (in case the next DC is a girl). The only themes that I liked were fish and sea creatures and monkeys. We went with monkeys.

Remind me to show you their bath next time you are over.Chat Icon

I would do the same - then if you really want, when company comes over you can switch out the towels or put the toothbrush holder in the cabinet if you wanted

Exactly - I'd be more inclined to go with something my kids loved rather than try and keep up appearances.

I don't care what someone's bathroom looks like - only that it's clean.

I vote for kid.

I agree. And I know when I've gone into bathrooms that were decorated for kids, my reaction was "how cute", not "what were they thinking?"

Maybe I don't unserstand, because I don't have kids, but I don't know why a bathroom needs to be decorated for a kid. It's not like they hang out there.

We had 2 bathrooms growing up, and they were both just bathrooms--one white & one blue.

Also, if there are multiple children, picking a theme could fights (one wants ducks, the other wants fish, etc)

My friend has her main bathroom decorated for her 6 year old (he picked out the shower curtain) & I did feel sort of like I was intruding on his space when I used it at a party they had.

But, it is your house, and shower curtains and soap dispensers are easy to change if you or kids change your minds.

I agree too. Well at least for me this is what I would do. I like my bathroom to look neutral. We have two baths in a Hi-Ranch, but one of those baths is in the apartment and once we have someone in there, we will only have one main bath. If the bathroom was just going to be for your kids and no one else using it (main bathroom), then I would do something cute for the kids. It's your house, do what makes you & your kids comfortable. Re: Decorating A Bathroom

Thank You so much everyone.
At first I was thinking "Well, how often do I have company"?
Then thought about it more and even used my parents (as an example...they have 2 bathrooms, both "neutral" decorated).

What brought this all on was, DH and I were in Target and saw sea creatures, Ducks, and I think frogs..really cute "themes"..towels, shower curtains, mats, etc.

I do like the idea of just doing a cute toothbrush holder, towels, and mat (which can all be put away when company comes).

Thank you again! I do appreciate it!Chat Icon
