Delivering at Winthrop?

Can I get some experiences?

How was L & D? What about the Maternity Ward?

They seemed a little strict as far as the nursery rules etc. I dont want them kicking DH out when im not ready etc.

Im almost considering switching, b.c Winthrop is a ride for us. Good Sam is our local Hospital.

But I want to stay and am hoping to hear some good things.

TIA!!!!

Re: Delivering at Winthrop?

The labor nurses were absolutely amazing and the delivery room was great. BUT..the maternity ward was another story. Quite obnoxious and one of the nurses chose to give my DD a bottle of formula while I was waiting in my room for them to bring her to me so I could nurse her. I was livid!!! Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Delivering at Winthrop?

I had a good experience at Winthrop, other than them not having a room available for me until morning.

The nurses were nice (some better than others), and they didn't seem strict with their visiting policies. I had my sisters in during the "grandparent" only time with no problems, and Al was never rushed out. They all seemed supportive of my BFing and never have her any bottles.

Re: Delivering at Winthrop?

I had both of my kids there.... Had a c/s with my first, and it took hours to get to my room (I didn't see my DS for a few hours after he was born). They were just that booked.. Nurses on the maternity floor were great! I also had a private room, at my request. Worth every penny.

For my second, I loved my L&D nurse. Had a great experience, was brought to my room within 2 hours, had DD with me right away. I was lucky in that I did not have a roommate, so there was no one bothering me about my guests. DH was with me from 10-10...

THe only think I didn't like was during the night feeding (this one night only), I rang the bell when I was finished BF my DD. When the nurse came to get her to take back to the nursery, she scolded me by saying since I was able to get up and walk, I should be taking her back to the nursery myself. Chat Icon

Other than that, had a good experience both times.

I delivered both of my children at Winthrop. I loved it there. The nurses were amazing. I liked how they were strict with the visiting hours...no one milling around after 8pm...except spouses. And I have to say...the food was pretty good too! Except that you eat dinner at 4:30!! But then a snack cart comes around 8pm. (Can ya tell I was all about the eating?) Chat Icon Oh...the one negative was that the room was so hot I thought I was going to melt. That was my one negative.

All in all, I had a great experience there.

Re: Delivering at Winthrop?

I had a GREAT experience. I spent a week there when I went into labor at 30 weeks and everyone was so nice. My boys were born 3 weeks later. Everyone was really great and the nurses are so helpful and seem to really care. My boys were in NICU and they were really strict, but I didn't seem to mind. There were definitly times DH stuck around a little past cut-off and no one got too upset. Truthfully, after the birth, you look forward to getting some rest!

I agree with Valerie except my room was so cold so I cover the vents up with stuff and if I needed more air I just took some things off Chat Icon. I will be delivering #2 their in July. I loved my L&D nurses and they were so attentive. I delivered at 5am and they change shifts at 7 so my 2nd nurse was so patient with me when it came time for me to go to the bathroom and really helped me. The maternity floor nurses are good for the most part. Their were 2 nurses we didnt care for, one we loved and we wished we had seen her again. They were great with the BF'ing and tried to help me but weren't nazi's about it. The first night I choose to have the baby brough to me all 3 times durning the night and by 3am he wasn't latching and I was frustrated and gave him some formula and the nurse picked him up when I was done and told her not to bring him back at 6 and she was fine with it. I also had a private room and I loved it. They never rushed DH out, he left on his own between 10 and 10:30 and I know their were other dad's on the floor. If you share a room then it might be different and you might need to ask your roommate if it is ok that he stays alittle later. You could go to the nursey when ever you wanted to see the baby. The rooms were cleaned every morning including the bathroom. I loved the food. I was nervous delivering their also because I never really heard much about it before becoming Pg and I wouldnt want to deliver any other place.

Re: Delivering at Winthrop?

I spent a week in L & D before delivering my son at 32 weeks and they were the greatest nurses ever! I really could not say anything bad about them. Almost 8 weeks later and my son is still in NICU and I really have no complaints.. The nurseries may run a tight ship ---but it works Chat Icon
Good Luck

Re: Delivering at Winthrop?

I, too, had a great experience. I was there at 33 1/2 weeks to be evaluated for pre-eclampsyia and happened to go into labor 2 days later. I spent a week in the hospital total and my boys were in the NICU for just over a week. They do run a tight ship but it's for the benefit of their patients - both the mommies and the babies. DH definitely stayed past the 10PM mark some days and no one batted an eye... you just have to be aware of the fact that they can say something to protect the privacy of the other women on the floor. Good luck!Chat Icon

Re: Delivering at Winthrop?

I had an absolute GREAT experience at Winthrop
(I delivered my other 2 at Southside)
L&D nurses were AMAZING
They werent tooo strict in the maternity ward about kicking people out
I wish they would have been because sibling hours are 2 hours and then the kids are supposed to leave and then regular visiting hours are 2 hours later
so I wanted to sleep because I was so tired but my roommates little boy stayed the whole ENTIRE DAY and he was bored and screaming and running around and waking up DD
I LOVE kids but not that oneChat Icon

Re: Delivering at Winthrop?

I had an amazing experience at Winthrop. I had a c/s and the nurses there were the best. They calmed me down, cracked jokes...all around were amazing. I had a longer recovery (because of the twins) and they made special accomodations for me to be put in a private room (and family could visit there) and not make me stay in the recovery area (where only DH was allowed).

The maternity nurses were amazing as well. They went above and beyond for me and DH in every way. They helped us out a lot too since we had two and provided a feeder to help me in the morning with the first feeding since DH could not be there at that time.

They are very strict with regards to visiting hours. YOu have to be buzzed in and you DH can be there from 9AM-10PM. The other visiting hours were 2-4PM for grandparents (babies are in the room with you) and 7:30PM to 9PM for everyone else (babies are all in the nursery at that time). However, I had my siblings and nieces and nephews come up between 2 and 4 and they never said anythign to me.

Additionally, having the 1 1/2 for visiting hours was good for us. I was so tried and recovering that I really didn't want the type of thing where people could come as they please. And having all the babies back in the nursery is good too so there are no germs being transferred to them.

All in all, from the doctors (pediatrician, anestheologist, attending, intern) and nurses.....everyone was so nice and great.

The L&D nurses were fantastic at Winthrop. The L&D rooms are nice (but they are not very accomodating to DHs at ALL).

The maternity ward is not great as far as room sizes and privacy...it's small and tight but it was fine.

I had a c/s so I was there for a while. I didn't feel they were strict about anything.

ETA: my roommate had her older son and her DH there aaaallll the time.

Re: Delivering at Winthrop?

I pretty much had a good experience. The L&D rooms were great. Most of the nurses were nice, Effie was amazing. I wasn't too happy with the anesthesiologists, the maternity ward nurses, or the physicians assistant who helped during delivery and came to my room afterwards.

Since we live in Melville I will be delivering closer to home this time at Huntington Hospital.

Soo true. I got to my L&D room at 4 a.m. and got my epi. I was already 7 cm at that time, but doc said to take a nap because we didn't know how long I would take to get to 10 cm. They only had a chair for DH and it didn't even have arm rests on it! Poor DH was falling asleep it the chair and nearly falling off it because he had nothing to lean on. Plus he was super cold, but they finally got him a warm blanket. But they really need to get something comfortable for them to sit on. Luckily I started puishing at 7 a.m. so he had to be up and near me. But a chiar would be nice!

Winthrop was amazing, the nurses in L&D and some of the nurses on the maternity floor. My babies were in the NICU as well and the support the nurses gave was incredible!!!

I had a very good experience there. I thought everyone was really great, helpful, kind. Especially the nurse during my delivery. She rubbed my hands and held them while I got the epidural. Great experience! Maternity was good too, got to rest, everyone seemed very nice.

Nope! Missing when I was there in May! Apparently, they got rid of them! DisneyGirl would know better, she is a L&D nurse there.

There are all new recliners for the spouses now. They removed all the old recliners and took about a year to replace them so for a long period of time dads got screwed out of a decent place to rest.
