Dental issues from mask wearing....
Has anyone’s dentist mentioned a dental issue stemming from prolonged mask wearing? Just had a dentist appointment and my dentist said my enamel issue is from the long time between cleanings during the shutdowns and prolonged mask wearing. Has anyone’s dentist mentioned this to them? Googled it and it actually seems legit when you look at the science behind it.
I noticed the issue starting my last appointment and I just assumed it was from going an entire year with no cleaning. 6 months later it’s not getting any better and the mask might actually be the answer as to why.
Anyone else?

Why would a mask cause dental issues? Any issue you're having is likely from lapses in dental care, not a mask.

Re: Dental issues from mask wearing....
If you breathe through your nose, how does a piece of fabric in front of your closed mouth affect your teeth?
ETA: Ah, OK. I breathe through my nose, and I still drink a lot of water, so I personally don't have an issue with a dry mouth, but I can see from the article if you pick up bad habits, it can affect your mouth.

Why would a mask cause dental issues? Sounds like a reach. Any issue you're having is likely from lapses in dental care, not a mask.
Dental problems due to masks
There are quite a few articles on the issue:
What is the actual impact of using face masks on our oral health? That same protective equipment that we are using to prevent contact with COVID-19 is directly creating negative implications to our health.
Increase of Tooth Decay When the mouth becomes dry because of wearing the face masks, the saliva produced to flush food particles in our teeth is decreased. Sugar helps bacterial to thrive which and with the food particles not being removed you see tooth decay.
Inflamed Gums When your body’s immune system sees increases in bacteria and viruses it will create inflammation of the gums. This could be a signal that there are too many bacteria in our mouth that is attacking your gums. This can eventually lead to periodontal disease.
Bad Breath Prolonged dryness in the mouth is the perfect environment for odor-causing bacteria to grow. This is then called Halitosis or Bad Breath. Many patients say that they notice a change in the breath when they have worn a face mask for long periods of time.
Gum Disease Once you have Gum Disease it is an irreversible dental condition and will require care for the rest of your life. This will slowly damage your gums and bone structure in your mouth. Many do not see any symptoms until they begin having receding and inflamed gums.
Changes in how you drink and breathing behaviors Trying to keep hydrated and drinking water while also wearing a mask can be a difficult compromise. It is just another reason to forget to keep drinking fluids all day long.
The mask also creates issues in which people will breathe through their mouths to improve inhalation capacity. Doing so heightens dry mouth and which in turn leads to various dental conditions. It is recommended that you continue breathing through your nose, continue drinking water and maintain oral hygiene to decrease dry mouth and the dental problems that can develop.

Interesting - I went to the dentist today (it's my second post covid cleaning - but it was a year in between my previous two) and they mentioned I had inflammation in my gums which has never been an issue.

I never had issues either so I was obviously annoyed and I wasn’t sure if my dentist was just trying to appease me by partially blaming it on the mask or if it was legit. I wear it while at work the entire time. If you go back soon ask your dentist bc I’m curious of their opinion.

Surgeons didn't pick up the bad habits. From the article, it's not the masks that are technically causing the problems, it's the bad habits that people are starting because of the masks. Breathing through the mouth a lot more, and not drinking enough water. As long as you breathe through your nose, and drink plenty of fluids, the masks shouldn't cause any problems, based on the article.

I know, I'm being sarcastic. I never heard such a ridiculous question asked. FTR, I have never met a toothless surgeon.

No, and I have been to the dentist three times in the last 2 months. I don't see how a mask would effect ones enamel.

Re: Dental issues from mask wearing....
I mean her dentist said this to her, she didn't make it up or find it on some crazy conspiracy website.
I would assume her dentist is a trained professional who may know more about such issues than people on here who love wearing their mask and won't hear one bad word about them- but what do I know?

It’s called mask mouth. It can be easily googled for the ones who think the poster is just making this up.

Re: Dental issues from mask wearing....
Why does everything have to be so all or nothing?
OP, this comment isn't directed at you. It's a comment on how people get so defensive about masks.
Things are allowed to have both benefits and drawbacks.
It is possible that masks can prevent the spread of one issue (COVID) and lead to another issue (dental).

Thank you! It's weird how some people get so defensive if you say ONE bad thing about masks, vaccines, whatever. It's like you insulted their mom or something.

Perhaps Dental SCIENCE is not really science. The only SCIENCE involves lock downs, masks and vaccines.

The best part is that it sounds very common also if you just google it.

And nobody said you should abandon masks wearing because of it. But it's something to be aware of and maybe just be careful and follow some of the tips posted above about staying hydrated, nose breathing, etc.

Dental issues from mask wearing....
I've read that masks can cause dental issues. I know I actually went to the dentist because I had a weird taste in my mouth that didn't go away for several days even after diligent brushing and flossing. The dentist said some people do have bacterial build up due to the masks and that was probably the off taste in my mouth. (I obviously thought I had a terrible infection and was going to die of sepsis because I am ridiculous like that). The dentist wrote my a Rx for mouthwash and the issue cleared right up.
