Dents in cans

So I ordered a ton of canned food and had to toss many for having large dents. However what is the verdict on tiny dents? I hate to throw these all away but I also don’t want botulism, so....

Re: Dents in cans

Botulism is usually swelling of the can.
Dents can happen in packing and shipping.
Generally if you open a can and hear a hiss or any release of air, it's comprised and should be dumped

Re: Dents in cans

Swelling of the can is the last step in botulism.

If the can pops, that’s bad, too.

Where are the dents? I usually don’t use them if it’s a biggish side dent. Saw a program in my food handler’s certificate class that said even a small dent can have a hole in it. You might not be able to see it, but it’s there. The can won’t pop or anything, but botulism can still be present. Since that program, I don’t use dented cans.

A tiny dent on the top lid thingy doesn’t bother me.

I was curious so I googled it. This website has a pdf with pics:

I buy organic canned veggies at Target. The one variety always has dents in the cans and there's never any left without dents, it's so annoying because those are my kids favorite, but I never buy the dented ones. I've always wondered how dangerous it is though.
