Desperate Help Needed for a Dog

I just read this on Facebook, and it completely broke my heart. The contact information is listed at the bottom:

Feb 14, 2014 Levittown, Long Island ( New York)
From Frances…a Wonderful Rescue Friend:
“My neighbor contacted me today and said she had to give up Sandy...now. They are leaving for a week Sunday morning and after what happened today, they will not keep her. Sandy got hold of one of their stray cats that comes in the house and roughed her up. She had NEVER done this before. This dog is in the WRONG home. It is chaotic, she is often caged, never walked and never treated like a part of the family. I had to have them TURN AROUND from bringing her to Town of Hempstead so that I could at LEAST TRY to save her.”

Please Cross-post so that we can help Sandy and keep her from certain death.

Sandy's Story

Sandy was found during Superstorm "Sandy", tied, almost hanging from a tree in the Rockaways. The police brought her to their station where one of the officers took pity upon her and brought her home. Sandy was a skeleton but surprisingly friendly even after the neglect she had obviously endured.

The officer brought Sandy home. Although the officer has only wanted to help Sandy, the home environment is not working out and now, Sandy has 24 hours to be placed either with a rescue or in a new home or she is going directly to a kill shelter. In fact, she was AT the KILL SHELTER when the officer contacted me for help. The officer's husband had taken her. I convinced them to bring her back home to give me a chance to outreach for help.

Sandy has been living in a home with 4 boys, ALL ages 5 and UNDER. In addition, there are 3 indoor/outdoor stray cats. The home is chaotic and Sandy is more frequently in her crate than being a part of the family. Sandy never goes for walks because the family does not have the time and is let outside in the yard to do her business. She is house trained.

Sandy is very playful and really a sweet dog. She listens to commands, is house-trained, spayed and received a rabies booster in March 2013. Prior to March 2013, she had been vaccinated with all required canine vaccinations.

In the late summer/early fall of 2013, I first met Sandy. The family has always had the best intentions, but does not have the means or the capacity to care for Sandy properly. When I met her, she was bald from the middle of her back, down through her tail and hind legs. I was able to arrange an appointment at a low cost vet and she was diagnosed with a flea allergy. She was in so much pain and the family just did not have the money to properly treat her. Thankfully, she received treatment and now her fur has grown back beautifully.

In a household with 4 small, very hyper and active boys, Sandy gets lost in the shuffle and therefore, she is again, in a position of being neglected.

Sandy needs a home and/or a rescue that can provide her with some additional training as well as a more calm environment where she can have a schedule of rest and play that will provide her with a daily rhythm. Otherwise she will surely perish in a kill shelter…

Sandy does not deserve to DIE IN A KILL SHELTER. That WILL be her fate. Caged, she will become aggressive and unadoptable and she will be killed.

PLEASE, consider giving Sandy a chance. Her time is UP. I must find a place for her by 3 p.m. Saturday, Feb 15th or she will be sentenced to death in the Shelter.

Can't she be brought to a rescue instead of a kill shelter?

OMG. I am SURE it's that crazy household and family that is destroying this DOG and bringing out the WORST in her. It happens all the time. I hope someone can save her, foster her, whatever. I wish I could. I am sooooo sick of these type of people mistreating their animals and then blaming the animals. When in a poor home environment, ANY dog can do the wrong thing.Chat Icon

I wonder if the cat being roughed up story is EVEN TRUE? Conveniently they are leaving for one week to go away and NOW the dog does this? I bet it's a lie so they have a good reason to DUMP her.Chat Icon

I'll never understand how people can treat animals that way. It makes me so upset and angry too!
