Re: Deviated Septum & Polyps

My mom had it done years ago. Do you see Dr. Kantu in brooklyn? Just wondering b/c i know they are very popular.

anyway, my mom never has an easy time with these things. You will have brusing under the eyes for a few days and lots of packing. But i think its done a lot better than how they did years ago when my mom had it done.

Our friend had it done too maybe a year ago, and he seemed a lot better. Had the bruisng and a headache..its rough when you first come out of that surgery, but within a few days its a world of difference.

Re: Deviated Septum & Polyps

I had it in March. I had my deviated septum fixed, MANY nasal polyps removed, and my sinus reduced. I kept on asking how many polyps i had and they said there were so many they couldnt count - it was just mounds of them.

I didn't have any bruising, but I did have splints and lots of packing. If you looked at me you couldnt tell anything, I just looked a little puffy. (that was once the gauze moustache came off, of course) Chat Icon

The surgery changed my life - I am so much more improved now; no more sinus infections, I can actually breathe thru my nose now since the polyps are gone, not snoring, etc.

Any specific questions?

I think it really depends on how bad you are to begin with. If I had just the deviated septum, I wouldn't have done it. But with the polyps I couldn't breathe thru my nose at all.

The deviated septum was really an after thought - at my last appt with the surgeon before surgery he said "I was looking thru your last scan, you have a deviated septum too, we'll fix that also while we're up there."

Hi Diana -- yes, I do see Dr. Kantu! He actually removed my tonsils and adnoids years ago...and I want back to him (the Father) and the deviated septum isn't as much a problem as the polyps are.

Thanks for the feedback -- he did tell me there would be no bruising, but that I would have packing and I'd go in once a week to remove any scars that develop.

This is exactly the same situation I'm in. The deviated septum isn't an issue as the polyps are...

Thank you so much for all the information - exactly what I was looking for- no bruises!

My mom sees the father too! although she hasnt been there for a while. the last procedure he did on her was something like freezing the bloodvessels to shrink them..i forget exactly but it helped her for a while with the sinus headaches.

I had seen one of the sons years ago and i cant stand him; but the dad is very nice.

Good luck! I hope it all goes well.

These days I think the deviated septum surgery is so common that the technique is probably so much different from when my mom had it done years ago.

Nope, I did not experience any bruising at all. Again like I said, I was just puffy/swollen.

BTW, everyone said how bad the packing removal is, and how painful it was. Thinking back, it really wasn't that bad. That didn't bother me as much as the followup appointments after that one to remove the blood clots, especially the first time when they do that (probably your second or third appt post surgery.) I didnt think it was going to be a big deal and was taken back a bit about how sensitive it was; so just be aware that it might be uncomfortable for you. Chat Icon

If you are going to go ahead with it, let me know and I'll give you some tips and lessons learned from my experience. Chat Icon

Re: Deviated Septum & Polyps

Ladies - I just wanted to say thank you again for your responses.

I've finally scheduled my surgery for next Thursday, the 11th.

Just one more follow up question - I'm a wedding planner and have an important meeting on the 12th (the following day of my surgery) -- it's going to be very difficult to reschedule it...but do you think it'll be okay for me to go to it?

I just don't want to reschedule it because it's just a walk-thru of a venue (not doing any heavy lifting or anything of the sort.)

Re: Deviated Septum & Polyps

i would maybe consider taking a cab there or having someone drive you, but you should be fine to do a walk through.

I probably wouldn't - you dont know how much pain you will be in and how much sleep you will have had the night before....

Good Luck. I am coming up on one year anniversary, my surgery was Friday March 13th.
