DH gets REALLY bad canker sores...

And now he has this weird looking thing under his tongue that he claims is a canker sore, but isn't that a weird place for one? He has had it for 3 or 4 days. What kind of dr. should he go to to investigate further?

TIA!!

Re: DH gets REALLY bad canker sores...

i would say to go to his regular doctor and then a get a referral. i got 2 cold sores in a week and went to my regular doc and she said it was triggered by stress and gave me pills and a cream. i dont know about under the tongue, he may need to see a specialist.

Canker sores are different from cold sores.

Alicia, if it's really bothering him maybe a dentist will have some advice.

This is on webmd:

A canker sore is a shallow sore shaped like a crater (ulcer) on your tongue or on the inside of your lip or cheek. Canker sores have a red border and a white or yellow center. They may be painful and can make it hard to talk and eat. You may have one or more than one canker sore at a time. Unlike cold sores, you cannot spread canker sores to other people.
Anyone can get a canker sore, but women, teenagers, and young adults have them more often. People usually get their first canker sore between the ages of 10 and 40. Most people have canker sores at some time in their lives, and some people have them regularly.

Thanks. He gets them all the time, so I really do think he needs to get the situation checked out. I'll have him start with his dentist.

I used to use this cream called Canka that helped. I bought it at CVS.

Re: DH gets REALLY bad canker sores...

switching toothpastes works. using one without a certain ingredient in it. sodium laurel sulfate...avoid. also eating more yogurt and taking lysine. the lysine works. i have been taking that lately and they are barely there. i also avoid acidic foods since that increases the sensitivity.

Re: DH gets REALLY bad canker sores...

I get them from stress, but I have noticed that acidic foods trigger them. I agree with the yogurt and listerine.

Re: DH gets REALLY bad canker sores...

I use to get them all the time. Now I rarely do. I found using Listerine at least twice a day - really made a huge difference. For me stress is a ket factor in them. But I read being prone to them is hereditary and my mom gets them all the time too - she is the one who turned me on to Listerine for them. No other mouthwash has worked like this.
